Nope. Different site. There are at least 20K at the convention center and 30K at the superdome. That doesn't include people still trapped in their homes and buildings.

Why would you assume an identical rate for the rest of the decade, particularly with systems as chaotic as hurricanes? We could have 22-23 hurricanes this decade. Then again, we might have seen the worst of it and only have a handful for the rest of the decade. There's no way to know, which is why the data from 2000-2004 isn't very useful at this point. There's no way to extrapolate a long term trend from four years worth of data.

The important point of the graph was that it demonstrates the long term decline in hurricane numbers and strength from the 1950's on. This period was supposedly one in which global warming was gaining strength and raising temperatures at an increasing rate. If global warming was in full swing, yet hurricanes have been in decline for decades, what does that tell you about the effect global warming has had on hurricanes?

The only reason I linked to that particular blog is that he had the official government data put into a graph that is easy to comprehend for people like you.

Actually, the chart says nothing useful the way it is organized. They could easily have broken it down int seasons or four years blocks, whatever. The chose a way of effectively negating four of the worst years in history.

And after doing that they still shoot themselves in the foot regarding this decade and made you look silly at the same time, as a number of us have already pointed out...

Apparently I read somewhere that things are set to get worse until 2015 or something like that...

Point is that the hurricane seasons do seem to be cyclical, that global warming isn't the main factor in their occurence - but it does appear to be a significant contributing factor...
