Ya we had 500 gallons (IIRC)on our pumpers and the response model was that the first truck went to the fire, pumped its 500 and then laid hose to a water source. The second truck went directly to a water source and laid hose to the fire. Ferrying water was VERY uncommon but then again, this was in newfoundland which has many many many streams, brooks, ponds.

    • In case you were wondering:

"Our offices have received many phone calls from congregational leaders asking how we can help the victims of Hurricane Katrina and our Conservative synagogues in the affected areas. To help our Conservative movement communities and all the victims of the community, United Synagogue has opened our Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. We ask Conservative Jews to make a financial contribution that will help our communities affected by the hurricanes.

Our Conservative synagogues are still assessing damage to their buildings and communities. Synagogues in the affected areas that sustain extensive damage that is not covered by insurance may receive money from the fund. Funds for assistance to individual victims will be made from our Hurricane Relief Fund to organizations on the ground that are best able to provide direct assistance.

Credit card donations can be made online at www.uscj.org; just click on the link to the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. When you make a credit card donation you must write in the designation box that the donation is for the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund.

Donations by check can be made payable to "USCJ"; indicate in the memo section that the donation is for the Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. Checks should be mailed to USCJ Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund; 121 Congressional Lane; Suite 210; Rockville, MD 20852. In order to reduce administrative costs we will not send an acknowledgement of the donation unless required by law or requested by the donor.

      Thank you.

        .
Given all the water around, a major fire spreading does seem unlikely-- sorry for the tangent but not beiong able to use standing water made no sense to me.

Drinking water will be a huge issue and some people may try drinking the floodwater out of desperation if trapped with no choice-- Does anyone know if it would be predominantly fresh water? The maps I saw seemed to indicate that NO is mainly bounded by lakes and rivers so the floodwater may seem palatable even if it would make you sick

About as likely as Ft. Pierce, FL being hit by two Cat 3s in a month or Pensicola being hit by two cat 3s in less than a year. NO almost got hit by Ivan last year.

Lake Pontchartrain is brackish water, so it would be unsuitable for drinking, even if there weren't all sorts of nasty things in the soup...
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • All the hotels and churches providing assistance are near full in Camden. I think the picture is the same across south AR.

We've housed refugees from hurricanes down south before...just not for this duration of time.

Murphy Oil (in El Dorado) IIRC has a couple Gulf oil rigs and a bigass refinery in Mereaux, LA (I think shortly north of New Orleans). I bet the refinery is junk now, but they have other locations.

                  • So, what happens to the Saints this season?

BTW, Slowwy multiple governments around the world are offering aid to the U.S., including our NATO allies (including France), Venezuela, etc. The U.S. has so far not responded to the offers. Typical BS of this administration, just like after 9/11.

                      • According to NPR this morning, an entire LA parish (the LA equivalent of a county) was washed away by the hurricane. The Gulf of Mexico intrudes 40 miles further than it did previously.
