Maybe the state of emergency has given him more powers. The initial call to evacuate probably didn't have as much weight.
      What?

      • Prison riot at Orleans jail and hostages have been taken. That seems really stupid to me, considering that the waters are rising and the jail will be inundated.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

        • People could refuse to comply with the "mandatory" evacuation.

This one looks to be carried out at gunpoint if necessary.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

According to CNN that could be as many as 30.000 people... I sure hope they don't have to rely on helis and small boats to evacuate those.

I dont think that will be needed. Form the pictures and video I have seen From New Orleans I dont see why anyone would want to stay. The problem is that the people left in the city are mostly people who could not evucate from the city. Some people who stayed are saying on the news that they had wished they left when the government told people too.

                • It's surrounded by water. Unless Jesus or Moses shows up, boats and helis are the only way out.

                    • With all the damage I think that New Orleans should be abandon. A city that sits below sea level is too dangerous to live in where hurricanes like this can hit.

The difference is, you'll be coerced to leave now, and if you don't, the coast guard won't be dropping by anytime soon to give you a ride.
