Its far more than that. This just illustrates that you don't even have the slightest clue as to how deep the Mexico-US hate runs. When the Mexican COACH says:

"The U.S. is a small team," he said. "They play like my sister, my aunt and my grandmother."

I think the hard feelings go WELL beyond a few players.

You fail to remember that this is the part of the world where a player was shot dead for a mistake at the World Cup.

I dont think Mexico are a "dirty" team by any standard. There are plenty of Latin teams with their fare-share of divers and big-mouths, but I think Mexico is a pretty good exception on the whole, which you wouldve seen when they beat Brazil recently, whilst being consistantly beaten off the ball.

The rivalry is a very nasty one, and I'm positive that every player was fired up about clinching the WC spot against the dirty Mexicans and rubbing it in their faces. Hell, that's what we did in the celebration at the end, with a bunch of players wrapped in American flags, celebrating in the middle of field.

There was NO HAND SHAKING at the end of the match (very rare at the end of an international match), and NO SHIRT EXCHANGING. The match ended, and the US celebrated and the Mexicans walked off the field (and then their coach thought to talk smack)

And Mexico are very dirty against the states. The hacking they did at Beasley (and the yellow should have been a red, it was a shameful sticking out of a leg at knee level to take down a streaking Beasley) and Donovan was ridiculous.

It wasn't against the hotheads, but against the whole damned squad.
Does it make the whole Mexican team (or nation, I dont know what you seem to think with these "dirty Mexicans"), responsible for those few idiots?

If their coach (the head of the team) is talking smack, dont you think he wouldve told the whole team to come off? It doesnt really matter what they all thought. But I guess theyre all dirty Mexicans whatever happened...

Germany are not a 3rd world country, its hardly the same as us lauding it over a country with the combined resources of one club.

Um... I know the FIFA rankings are definitive by any measure, but Mexico was ranked 5th on them.
Well we can disgard this from your arguement for starters...

And this "3rd World Country" has reached the Round of 16 at the World Cup in the last 3 WC's and it would have probably done so in 5 straight, but was banned in 1990 for falsifying ages in the Youth Championship.

Hardly like most "3rd World Countries".
Does this mean that the US (that has by far more resources than Mexico), shouldnt expect more? This was only a matter of time, its nothing to be lauding yourselves over, or do you cheer USA USA USA at the Olympics around the TV?

Btw, if you hadn't noticed, Brazil is a 3rd World Country as well if Mexico is .
Are you trying to say Mexico has the same foundation or resources for football as Brazil?

Come on Imran, you really think the coach speaks for the whole squad? Hes probably more out of touch with the players feelings than the tea lady. He clearly has a personal grudge, or is attempting some kind of crappy mind games.

I recall Escobar being shot in Colombia for scoring an own goal, but I dont know any Mexican player being shot for a mistake in a WC, thats not to say there wasnt one, I just dont know of one?

            So is Argentina.

It is hard to comprehend the kind of hatred between the US team and the Mexico team. It's not like they invaded you and murdered tens of millions of your people...

            • Our dislike of team Mexico is based on the recent behavior of their team and fans. It isn't based on a war that ended 60 years ago and decades of nationalist propaganda like the Chinese hatred for the Japanese squad. I leave it up to the reader to determine which reason is more defensible.

What's wrong with the word "squad"? It's a perfectly normal synonym for "team" or "side".

I know of the hatred from SOME fans and SOME players, if youre intrepreting this as some incredible hatred between everyone on both sides, then the few idiots with their outrageous comments got exactly what they wanted.

Some players always throw out stupid talk before any game, of course a rivalry already exists, but if youre getting caught up in it calling them all dirty Mexicans, then thats your own personal problem.

Yep. It's really wierd how these guys can be experts on a rivalry they've probably never witnessed . We hate them, they hate us, and it goes all the way down to the players, it's that simple.

[q=Maq]Are you trying to say Mexico has the same foundation or resources for football as Brazil?[/q]

Same resources undoubtably. Mexico is a richer country than Brazil (in per capita GDP). There is a reason that Mexicans haven't come over to Europe and that's because the Mexican league tends to pay its players VERY well (close to European levels).

[q=UR]It is hard to comprehend the kind of hatred between the US team and the Mexico team. It's not like they invaded you and murdered tens of millions of your people...[/q]

It's a combination of Mexican nationalism and American nationalism. It has not been unusual when the US goes to Mexico to hear chants of "Osama, Osama" and for players and fans of the US to be pelted with urine bombs (the Mexican fans fill up ballons with their piss and fling them at Americans). American nationalism isn't willing to accept such slights.

Says someone who's never seen a match.

The Mexicans all engage in kicking and fouling of American players. They all play dirty, some more than others, of course, but they've all done it. Perhaps you can get away with more in the Mexican League, but it's not clean football to us.

And besides they are dirty Mexicans... when's the last time they showered .

OK, let's get this clear. I hate to pull rank, but my Civ invented this game and we get to decide what things are called, right?

So, we don't "top-end the sphere into the goal bag", as I've heard it described in the 'States, we "head the ball into the net".

I'll try and define the nuances of squad, team & side:

A squad is a pool of players from which the team is selected. If someone is described as a "squad player" it means that they are probably not first choice to be in the team. They are there to make up the numbers in the squad for when the first choicers are unavailable (unless they play for chelsea, where the whole squad are probably first-team calibre) .

A side is basically another word for team, but a little bit wider, allowing in aspects of squad. So, when someone says "they're a good side", they are referring to the first team that has been getting the good results. This won't be the same 11 every week, and will dip into the squad, so a side will involve more players than than a team.

However, when someone says "they're a good team", they'll probably mean "a good side", so it's fair to say that these two are pretty close.

Of course, if someone says "they're a great club" - then this brings in a historical dimension, and would presumably refer to great achievements repeatedly at different points in their history. So Liverpool, Man Utd & Arsenal can all qualify here, but if someone said "Spurs are a great club", for example, then the only sensible thing to do is to fall about laughing.

No you don't . All you get a nice mention that you invented the game and that's it. Frankly I'd rather adopt Brazilian terms (whatever they are), because they've shown better ability to play the game .
