Nah, to do that he would have had to explain the base-10 number system or something along those lines.

Actually "idiot" and "moron" originally had specific meanings, but the APA withdrew their use from official terminology because they had become popular perjoratives. "Idiot" was used to describe someone with lower intelligence than "moron". Even "imbecile" was at one time officially accepted to describe someone who was retarded, but not as severely as a "moron". Today the proper terms are "severely mentally retarded" and "moderately mentally retarded" instead of "idiot" and "moron" respectively.

this would of course account for the fact that kids in the US dont play with games and toys about dinosaurs - it would explain the mass demonstrations against Steven Spielberg when Jurassic Park came out. It would explain the fact that in most states there isnt even any thought to teaching "Intelligent design" as science.

Cmon. This number doesnt pass the sniff test. 10,000 years? Most folks are innumerate, and probably dont think of that as incompatible with evolution. They dont automatically think that the bronze age began in 4000 BCE.

It's normally a very loose term, except when someone uses it specifically like:
It's a fact that 50% of any large enough population are idiots. So?

Which is alluding to its definition of someone of "sub-normal" intelligence.

Q: you believe that species evolve from other species, or that they were created directly by God?

Average Joe : thinks - oh, geez, created by God, thats in the bible and all, hes trying to get me to disagree with the bible, secular humanist jerk!

                              A: The latter

Later the same day, at the aquarium

Docent : Dolphins returned to the sea but seem to be descended from land mammals.

Average Joe: Thats kewl. No junior, you cant have a whole bag of whale shaped saltwater taffy. We're supposed to go to dinner later.

See most folks arent ideologues. They respond differently in different situations. The notion that most Americans are raving creationists simply doesnt jive with my personal experience. Sure, theyre mainly church going, and a decreasing minority of church goers are members of the liberal denominations that explicitly try to reconcile God and evolution. But on a day to day basis, on the rare occasions it comes up, they are functioning Darwinians.

saying you don't believe in evolution doesn't necessarily mean you have ever given serious thought to the issue. A large percentage may be saying that to identify with their friends, church, community, political party whatever. Its like giving the liberals the bird.

So its silly to take what people say in polls literally on questions like this.
