Many give their lives to serve and protect... and let's not tarnish that because of some bad cops. I would bet that many of the people that try to paint all cops as bad would never ever consider putting their lives on the line for somebody else
Well, I´ve seen my share of both good cops and bad. But as always the attitude towards cops and the treatment you get is dependent on your political beliefs or the color of your skin. Thus a white liberal middle class guy will get better treatment than a black working class commie.

    Sad but true.

      • BBC:

Mark Whitby said: "I was sitting on the train... I heard a load of noise, people saying, 'Get out, get down'.

"I saw an Asian guy. He ran on to the train, he was hotly pursued by three plain clothes officers, one of them was wielding a black handgun.

"He half tripped... they pushed him to the floor and basically unloaded five shots into him," he told BBC News 24.

"As [the suspect] got onto the train I looked at his face, he looked sort of left and right, but he basically looked like a cornered rabbit, a cornered fox.

"He looked absolutely petrified and then he sort of tripped, but they were hotly pursuing him, [they] couldn't have been any more than two or three feet behind him at this time and he half tripped and was half pushed to the floor and the policeman nearest to me had the black automatic pistol in his left hand.

"He held it down to the guy and unloaded five shots into him.

"He [the suspect] had a baseball cap on and quite a sort of thickish coat - it was a coat you'd wear in winter, sort of like a padded jacket.

"He might have had something concealed under there, I don't know. But it looked sort of out of place with the sort of weather we've been having, the sort of hot humid weather.

"He was largely built, he was quite a chubby sort of guy.

"I didn't see any guns or anything like that - I didn't see him carrying anything. I didn't even see a bag to be quite honest.

"I got into the ticket hall. I was approached by a policeman and London Underground staff asking me if I needed counselling.

"I was just basically saying I've just seen a man shot dead. I've seen a man shot dead. I was distraught, totally distraught. It was no less than five yards away from where I was sitting. I actually saw it with my own eyes."

Commuter Anthony Larkin, who was also on the train at Stockwell station, told 5 Live he saw police chasing a man.

"I saw these police officers in uniform and out of uniform shouting 'get down, get down', and I saw this guy who appeared to have a bomb belt and wires coming out and people were panicking and I heard two shots being fired."

LOTM - well, lets discount the eyewitness who says he saw wires. This guy doesnt know that wearing a bulky jacket on a warm day is a mark of suspicion as a suicide bomber?? And again, when the cops chase him, he runs for the tube? And refuses to stop??

            • I think in the UK and in Canada there's not really an issue with race and police...

And I also think a lot of the problems Che describes come from the people in general from the area -- the crime rate is astronomical around there, there's just a hugely greater percentage of "bad people" living there, cops included.

              • It seems like the British press and/or the authorities omit a lot of information in their reports. I assume this is deliberate, but perhaps I'm just jaded by the internet, where the "truth" is known within the hour because nobody can stop talking about events in the news.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I won't argue that there are "some" police who might act in the fashion you discribe. However, there are many that don't really care what the color of you skin is, or what your political belief is... they only care about doing their job. Again... let's not paint all cops as racist pigs... Cops give their lives to protect people...

You are aware that here in the States there are LOTS of black cops, dont you? Which doesnt mean SOME white cops arent racist.

                    • I my last job I came to know several detectives (and my sister is going out with a cop currently). I have never had any bad experiences with the police myself.

That said, we should recognize police have a stressfull position also rife with possible corruptive influences, and that is not a great mix, specially for people with a predesposition to violence or greed.

The authorities will withhold information for obvious reasons (avoid warning other perps, secure all information/avoid spreading false info), so rumors will abound for a bit. The truth will be out at the inevitable news conference at about 5.30pm or so.

In the paper the other day they wre saying how police got the order to go for the headshot (as compared to torso shot that UK police normally does if it needs to take someone down) in case of suicide bomber. What happened is not clear really yet, but if you don't stop in a tube station as an asian man being asked to stop by armed police you got a deathwish.

                          • House search by the looks of it, rumors of 6 shots fired. Not much else to go.

                            • Asher is right if the information we have so far is correct. What do some of you expect, for nice reasoning with the guy to take off his explosive belt and come to the station and have a nice cup of tea?

It sounded like, from descriptions, that he was armed with a device, the police apprehended him and would probably have attempted to disarm him if he stayed perfectly still...he didn't...and there you go. The consequences don't need explaining, they are readily apparent. I think regardless of governmental system the action would have been the same for someone carrying out the same act.

Now I'm not exactly the biggest fan of the police but this sounds like they've acted with professionalism and made a hard decision, and the right one

                              * of course, assuming present information to be correct.
