Treaty of Ghent reflects the draw but Battle of New Orleans essentially sealed the fact that no further British designs would be foisted upon American territories or sovereignty.

I'm not a big fan of Gen. Westmoreland, but you can't tag him with the loss. He was only in command up through the Tet Offensive -- which by the way, militarily devestated the Viet Cong. After that, the war was prosecuted by the North Vietnamese.

Thus, US later negotiated a peace, which granted neither side a victory.

It was only long after the U.S. had gone home that the North Vietnamese violated the treaty by sending its armies slashing across the border and into the South.

Republicans will, of course, support such a move. It was a military effort to affect a regime change of depositic rulers who had ordered their own countrymen killed.

In reality towards the end of the war the Brits had indeed turned their full attention to the former colonies and had intended a 3 front invasion of the states. To that end, 1 prong was completely blunted and turned back at the battle of Lake Champlaign. 1 prong successful in that DC was burned but blunted at Baltimore and ultimately decided that it was too costly to occupy. Finally 1 prong decisively demolished at the Battle of new Orleans.

Decision goes to the defender. Winner - US for the second time in less than 30 years.

And achieved almost none of the objectives.

As Olgie's list of (primarily) single ship actions show, the US usually prevailed on the Great Lakes and in frigate to frigate actions. However, the naval balance of power in the Atlantic was, to say the least, lopsided in Britain's favour.

The list of British/Canadian victories on land, including the battles of Queenston Heights, Detroit, Chrysler's Farm, Bladensburg, and Chateaugay, are far more numerous than US victories.

The ultimate American objective in the War of 1812 was the conquest of Canada. American politicians positively salivated over the prospect. (You can still read their speeches the Congressional record)

Hence, the fact that we are still here is proof of the US defeat. Repeated American invasions of Canada were defeated. The conquest of the US was not a British war objective, just a tempting bonus once the US was on the ropes. Sadly, it didn't turn out.

What about the beginning? Glad you agree with my point.

                              ...and while I'm here.

                              Westmoreland - 9 pts.
