I called up someone who I value their opinion and asked them the same question. This topic made me think enough where I wanted more views. They basically said that what it boils down to is the ignorance of the individual, people, or society.

My point of playing devil's advocate was lost in the debate. Hence, I have to concede that maybe your overall "definition" or "belief" is the dominant one.
