There are likely individuals who receive satisfaction from being oppressed, but this is probably due to something warped in their upbringing rather than a genetic trait (though you never know) - this person had domineering parents, never broke past those psychological barriers, so find themselves less stressed when "oppressed" than not. This is an aberration, though.

As other posters have stated, there's a continuum between absolute freedom and absolute control, and while some freaks want one or the other, the vast majority want something in between, most likely outside (governmental or tyrannical) control over big issues (national security, etc.) and freedom over smaller, personal issues (who they can sleep with, where they can work.)

But just as an individual can be afraid to make decisions for themselves, a nation is made of groups of individuals, and a nation (or culture) can have something akin to a maturity level, and a fear of certain decisions. Tack on a history of tyranny, and a nation may well be so afraid of making its own large-scale decisions that it "prefers" a strong leader to do so.

      Oppression

      It's not binary.

Hey Provost, can you do "I'd hit it " in binary?

The joke was overdone in the middle of the first post that made it.

Well, old grumps like to lose rights only relevant to young people. There's a certain I-can't-go-on-an-all-night-dancing-rave-and-then-have-a-hot-orgy-with-four-partners-and-a-chocolate-cake-so-neither-should-you about it.

St Leo, you obviously know little about the lives of some "old people". More power to them, btw.
