I would think that any man willing to submit to circumcision as part of an AIDS-related prevention measure, has already demonstrated such a level of awareness and caution that one must question whether they can be accurately compared with the norm.

Or, following usual "placebo" testing methods, were a control group left unaware of whether they had been cut or not? I doubt it.

I doubt you can ever do a proper double blind test of cirumcision You also cant do that on say, talk therapy as a treatment for depression, or exercise, weight loss and heart disease. Thats the nature of lifestyle changes, as opposed to meds.

So youve got some scientific suggestions of why it might work, youve got the real world epidemilogical evidence (with its inherent statistical unreliability), and youve got an inevitably flawed study.

I don't know about the current large scale study, but in the previous prospective trials done in Kenya they used a pool of truck drivers - one of the highest risk groups in Africa, and rabdomly selected them to be in the treatment group and the control group. They attempted to determine if the potential exposure of the two groups was equal, i.e., that they were equally active.
