Rabbinic commentators never referred to a literal form of interpretation, but rather to Pshat, direct interpretation - which allows for ordinary metaphor - to be distinguished from drash - hyperliteral (IE one that finds meaning in the smallest things, even an odd grammatical particle), allegorical meaning, and mystical meaning.
Jews, for all their faults, are usually approximately sane. I was refering to Evangelical literalists, who couldn't care less what Rabbinical commentators thought.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

yeah, but i get bored with fundies vs secularists, and only slightly less bored with fundies vs liberal christians, so i use these kinds of things as a chance to inform people more about Judaism. Some folks are completely bored with me as a result, but i dont really care

Only read the first page. But my flatmate was once schizophrenic and medication sorted him out from it. But it has come back slowly, he's still keeping it together but I worry that medical "fixes" are not permanent and that we should really be looking at Shamanistic rituals for more information. Cheers Stew.

I tend to see it as fundies vs real people.

actors in general are wonderful passionate
bright people... just promise me that
when you're rich and famous you won't let your
ego get bigger than your brain.

"Well, that is too bad, but does that mean he shouldn't be allowed to say what he thinks?"

of course he should be allowed to say what he thinks.

and i agree with whoever said it was all a drama show.
i mean if Matt wanted to do something serious about mental health he would invite someone like Michael Fordham who wrote Jungian Psychotherapy:a study in analytical psychology......like that would ever happen

Did either Lauer or Cruise say anything to indicate that either of them had a factual basis of their arguments? I think not. Look closely how Cruise argued with Drudge, not by offering factual rebuttal, but by dominating the conversation to the point of virtually excluding of Lauer. Cruise didn't arue, he bullyed wityh a smile on his face. I would just Love to get Cruise on the O'Reilly show. I'm willing to bet that Bill could take him on, or at least edit him to pieces prior to showtime.
I've treated hundreds of people with depression, bipolar disorders, and ADHD. I've known many, many people dramatically helped by pharmacotherapy. I've known workers able to go back to their jobs, mothers able to cope with their families, kids able to stay in school, you name it. Scientology wouldn't touch most of the people I treat first because they have no money and second because they're actually sick.

It's a credit to the good doctor that he got that wrong. Shows that he's paying the proper amount of attention those two deserve.

That a Scientologist like Cruise would have the unmitigated gall to criticize anything else as being a "pseudoscience" is simply hysterical.

Lauer should have offered Cruise the chance to come back and debate with an actualy psychiatrist over the issue. Of course, then the psychiatrist might get sued once he cleaned Cruise's brainless clock.

That's amusing to say in the least, since there's a lot of crackpot psychiatry involved in Scientology/Dianetics.

Tom Cruise was arguing with Matt Lauer of NBC's The Today Show, not Matt Drudge. The link is to a transcript of his appearance.

My response was to point out that you're more interested in the substance of the arguments, not actually in which airheaded/deluded celebrity was making what points against another equally airheaded/deluded celebrity. That's to your credit.
