  • City employs homeless people to battle weeds

ALBUQUERQUE -- An army of mostly homeless people are making Albuquerque a nicer place to live. The city of Albuquerque is in for a facelift as hundreds of people take to the streets to clean them up.
Over the next three weeks or so workers will spread out over the city, picking up anything that doesn't belong.

The unique and integral part about this program is that most of the workers out here are homeless.

The city pays a stipend of about $50 a day, allowing each person to make up to $600.

In 2004, the so-called war on weeds employed close to 3,800 homeless people and removed 600,000 pounds of weeds around the city.

The program has been such a success that the city plans to make the program permanent

July's city budget will include funds to make this program a reality year round.

“In many instances this program made all the difference for someone to get off the streets permanently,” says Laurie linden of St. Martin's hospitality. “To have enough money behind them, to go on and look for jobs elsewhere in the city so they can stay permanently off the street.”

The city is divided into ten different sections, all of which are considered priority areas for weeds.

    Putting homeless people to work.

Perhaps this will convince many of them, or give many of them the oppurtunity, to start a real life and get them off the street.

    Or maybe not.

On the one hand, I like this cuz it helps the homeless and pays them a fair wage. On the other hand, it's less work available for people trying to keep their homes.

It gives homeless people a little cash and beautifies the city! What more could you want?

We need a program like this in Camden.

Maybe no one else was doing that job. How about paying them to make their own shelters (with supervision), sweep the sidewalks, and etc.?

That's a good idea. Vancouver could sure use a program like that.

awesome program. we don't have that many homeless people around here, but we have some drug addicts, etc. giving them some nice living conditions in city-owned buildings could be nice.

You should give the nice living conditions to hard working low income families, and let the druggies live in the dilapidate houses that those families currently live in.

                Kick ass program.

I've always wanted something like this in every city.

It seems to be a no brainer.

by "nice living conditions" I meant blue-collar working-class homes.

In California bottles and cans come with a 5-cent deposit, so there are people who make a living cleaning them off the streets.

                          Bill3000 sighting!!

I think it is a great idea. Giving homeless people a chance to make their own money and thereby raising their self esteem may actually giving them a chance to pick up their lives again

I'm curious about the specific details behind this. Up to $600, is that per week or month if it's an ongoing program or for the entire course of the program if it only runs for a certain length of time each year?
