Why grow your own? Potatoes are almost free in bulk. 15 - 20 cents per pound for a 50 lb bag. Much cheaper for higher quantity (like 5 cents per lb by the truckload).

It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I suppose it would be cheaper then I thought if you bought in bulk and never eat any where but at home. Still have to be expensive to feed all those people though. Since they are in Arkansas they can own a big plot of land and farm I guess. They could raise chickens and livestock for food and profit and they might not even need welfare given the massive farm subsidies the Republicans have been doling out in recent years.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

You don't even need to farm, dude. No chickens or livestock. If they don't buy anything that's pre-packaged, they can eat cheap cheap. A small garden might help, but wouldn't be necessary.
They can all eat well without gov't assistance.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Hell, I can feed myself on less than 100$ a month if I put my mind to it.
If I was feeding 18 people that would go down to about 40$ a month per person.
720$ a month times twelve months = 8640$ a year in food12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

I spend closer to 200 a month on food for myself right now because I eat a lot of steak and seafood...12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

The problem would be if they were all teenagers, at which point they would eat more than adults, but since the age spread is so wide, the smaller kids are not eating that much, and I assume the teenagers will be moving out before their final siblings are teenage themselves.
I think if might be worst for one of these couples that has sextuplets or so, because you then get 6 teenagers at the same time, and then the same burden immdiatly going into college. If you don't like reality, change it! me

Black beans seem to go for around $1.10 per pound in a $25 pound bag.
25lbs Onions $13
60lbs Russet Potatoes $12
12 ears Corn $3
20 lbs of beets $12
25 lbs Carrots $12.50
25 lbs rice $20
Meat will cost much more but I suppose if they could stock a pond on their property, raise chickens, maybe some cows & goats then they might be alright. That will take a lot of manpower to do though and it will be hard to raise all those kids, work a job for income, and farm. I could be done though.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Why do you have them on a farm? Again, not necessary. To save cost on meat, cheese, and eggs. We already have concluded they wouldn't be living in a city since that's to expensive and if you're in the countryside then why not just use some of that spare land?Originally posted by DanS
