IIRC, it happened in the 70s, and I remember hearing stories that scared the bejeezuz outta me.

The real problem is that with the emancipation of the insane, the states cut their funding for mental health programs, and then people who needed help and wanted it could no longer get it if they couldn't afford it. Still, I'd rather be homeless than trapped in a place I didn't want to be with abusive staff.

Given what goes on in nursing homes and mental care centers still to this day, I would absolutely disagree.

Why cant we do that anymore anyway? Its not all that inhumane to take a person who cannot care for himself and take care of him, is it?
"take care of him" has so many meanings.

          Most assylums are not humane.

You also have the intellegence to know how to take care of yourself. You would be capable of making use of the homeless shelters and other programs already set up. You would also no doubt groom yourself and keep a presentable appearance.

So you'd rather be beaten and sexually abused and kept in restraints than wander around homeless in confusion?

Depends on who's doing the beating and sexual abuse.

Seriously though, if I were a deranged homeless person I would rather wonder on my own. However if a person is having a detrimental effect on society they should be removed. We dont give criminals happy pills and then toss them back out onto the streets, so we shouldnt do that with the homeless.

If asylums were run properly there wouldnt be the rampant abuse.

Yes, it is better to be ill and free, than well and caged.

                    The homeless aren't necessarily criminals.

New York City and many other US jurisdictions outlaw living on the streets. I'm rather ambivalent about these kinds of laws. On the one hand, it requires the government to take care of these people, one way or another. On the other hand, homeless people, crazy or not, have as much right to the public streets as anybody else in this society.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

There's nothing "well" about being in an assylum, no matter what way you look at it.

Such as not looking pretty. They are filthy, many of them dont have the IQ to determine right from wrong, and they scare the gentry.

No. If they are not productive members of society then they dont have any right to the streets. They piss and **** where they please, carry around garbage and disease.

                            They are detrimental to society.
