Spiffor, I am opposed to all religions. I don't feel like defending Islam, when I don't think it should exist. They may have legitimate reasons for their dislike of Western imperialism, but the expression is reactionary. The Nazis had some valid arguments too, that doesn't mean I'll defend them.

Islam has placed itself on the wrong side of history. The major political expression of Islam is anti-Enlightenment, and that I can't abide. The Englightenment was the greatest product of humanity, it is our best hope for a sane and human future.

This is false. Islam is a complex thing, with complex internal politics, and a great many Muslims are people just as smart as you and me.

If I was posting in a board full of Muslims that paint Christians with a broad brush, saying the Christians are all barbaric decadent Crusaders, whose only aim is to prevent the rise of the Muslim nation, yada yada yada, I'd defend the Christians in face of such ignorance. And you know how much I love Christianty

See my reply to JohnT. I only "defend" Islam in that I try to fight off the ignorance and bigotry that abounds on this board. I'd "defend" Christianty just the same if I was confronted to people who accuse all Christians of eating babies.

I would love to see religions become compeltely irrelevant. Unfortunately, we live in a world where religion is the core of the "clash of civilizations" between the West and the Muslim world. This is why it is better to know what we're talking about, instead of BAMing.

It's hard not to be. All religions tend to have many of the same reactionary ideals, but Islam is the only major religion that acts on many of them, up to sentencing people to death for what we would consider to be minor infractions. Yes, Islam is a lot more complex that we're making it out to be, but that's partly the fault of the silence of criticism from within Islam itself. There needs to be a more strenuous criticism, not merely from allied Islamic states, but from Islamic society itself. It doesn't matter what Saudi Arabia says while Saudi newspapers write that Jews drink the blood of Muslim children.

I can't bother to read those 5 pages of thread to see if it's been said, but I read once a translation of a part of her book, it was really hateful, depicting Muslims as pigs, appealing to mass murder, etc.

Had she written something like this against Jews, people would probably agree with what is being done to her.
