        Exactly.
Its the same if you look at the electoral map of the UK. Most of it looks blue (Conservatives) but on closer inspection, most of the blue is because of large, sparsly populated areas.

Cities are much more cosmopolitan places than the countryside/small towns and this breeds more cosmopolitan attitudes among city dwellers.

There are some demographic difference between cities and rural areas that point to the split. More people are unionized in the cities then in the countryside. More people are ethnic minorities in the cities then in the countryside. More people in the countryside own guns. More people in the countryside are religious conservatives. More people in the cities are Catholic, more people in the countryside are Protestants. More people in the cities are openly gay. More people in the cities are employed by the government.

All of those are demographic features which point towards voting for one party or the other. I would also suggest in many cities there is more of a tradition of machine politics, in which solid political loyalty is valued and voting for one party becomes an important value in itself.
          all good points

Clark County, NV in the 2004 election only went for Kerry 51.7%-46.8%. Do you know Diss if this is simply due to Clark county including much of the suburbs, or if there are a fair number of Republicans in Vegas?

despite our liberal attitudes towards sex we are a fairly conservative town- especially with regards to economics. Our newspaper (Las Vegas review-journal) is fairly conservative.

Back in the old days, Las Vegas was populated mostly by people from southern states. Although lately this has been changing as most of our new population is from California and Mexico. We also have a fair number of mormons in our city as well.

People in the cities are more likely to be sucking on the government ***, and therefore more likely to vote for the party that keeps the milk coming.

Lancer, do you really want the U.S. to return to the hellhole it was before the U.S. started giving money to the cities?
