I don't favor conservative policies

but corruption is the absolutely worse thing for a democracy..

so I would vote against the liberals this election (maybe for some 3rd party... maybe not)

and than hope that when the conservatives **** things up, which they will do, people would vote NDP instead of liberals

I don't understand your objection, Jon.

There are guaranteed elections at least once every five years.

The PM can choose to bring down the government at any time before that and call a general election. Paul Martin has promised to call one by the end of the year (whenever the Gomery commission is finished)

If the government loses the confidence of the House then there will also be an election.

So what's your problem?

A long, long time.

We had an election June 28th 2004. That election is what gave us the Liberal minority government we have now.

There is no way this government lasts beyond the end of the year, though. Even if they manage to survive Conservative/Bloc attempts to bring them down, Martin has promised an election in the near future. If he reneged on that promise he would almost certainly lose the support of the NDP and quite possibly the members of his own party, forcing the government out through a vote of no-confidence.

It's generally seen as desperation if the PM doesn't call an election within about 4 years (fear of what the electorate will do). For instance, the Conservatives held on to the bitter end in 1993 when they were going to get their asses kicked...
