        because gay people are really happy. Instead of forcing themselves to partake in something they don't like (sex with the opposite gender) they are doing something that comes naturally to them.

            Surely the usage of the word gay to refer to homosexuals must have had a beginning somewhere. Was there possibly a literary origin?

              From here the etymology is halfway down.
              Noel Coward's 1929 musical Bitter Sweet has the first uncontested use of the word: in the song "Green Carnation", four overdressed, 1890s dandies sing:
