Well much of the wisdoms of 'god' do indeed fall into this category. But outside this frame work we have a huge range of very interesting and often bizare writtings(the bagavad ghitta for example). And it tends to fit itself around ALL the cultures of the world - i dont think there are any that dont have some sort of religious tradition?

Native american teachings and rituals, the focus on the natural world(with simular aspects to japanese Shinto) is quite different from a Deity led religion like christianity, but they all fulfill, in very simular aspects an obviously important part of what makes us who we are and how we got here?

Or proved- such as the gift of prophecy actually existing, rather than being a figment of the imagination, just like the auditory hallucinations.
Do you believe in any gifts of the holy spirit, or in the holy spirit at all?

I would think that a more basic doubt than just one manifestation.

As for the topic of this thread, I have heard from him once. But it was a rather personal thing.

Pretty simple, really. The second is like it, love your neighbour as yourself. You cannot love others properly, unless you also love yourself.

Not since the summer of 1958, when he or one of his angle told me, that "It was not my time to died, but I must fight, you must fight".
I was drowning in a canal. At that moment, I had no ability to swim. The next moment I did have the ability to swim again and was able to get to the side of the canal were other could help me.

There is a God, believe or not, your choice. I do believe.

it takes very little faith to beleive that God can talk to you, if you beleive in God in the first place

            at least, so I find

(note that I don't beleive that everyone who claims to hear God's voice does so.. in fact, I am pretty critical about that)

              Very true Jon.

On the flip side if you don't believe in God it's impossible to believe that God talks to others, and so such people think believers are nutballs.

Too bad for them, I'd rather be a believer than be thought sane by athiests.

Not all religions. The ancient Greek-Roman religion was based on myths and so on. It provided people with explanation of the things that couldn't be explained. However, it did not give real answers about who we are and how we got here, what the deeper dimensions are of ourselves. The fact that christianity focused on these latter aspects instead of the material world was one of the factors that encouraged its growth. In ancient religions the most important thing was to honour the gods by making sacrifices etc etc. However it did not matter a thing what you really thought. The gods didn't penetrate your mind, they didn't know or influenced what you actually did (mostly). Christianity was different, everything there was focused and based on the inwards contemplation, salvation from a personal God that you could 'know' personally Even though this sounds strange for modern western people, this attracted many people in the troubled times of the Roman 3rd century.

So really not all religions fulfill the same roles. Some religions have other priorities!
