AH has some good candidates, but some caveats are necessary for the Washington area.

Look inside the government. The Washington area is overflowing with government jobs. Some of these jobs might be glorified secretarial-type jobs at the beginning.

I've known people who are successful working at NGOs, but NGOs most often pay squat. Also, most NGOs are scams, IMO.

Don't spend much time looking for political jobs. There just aren't that many political jobs available.

Washington's primary industry is gov't, but its secondary industry is law. She might look at paralegal work in a related field in a law firm. That might not be her thing, though. Some of these jobs require either some time as a galley slave, if you don't have your paralegal certificate.

Overall, I think her most worthwhile bet is trying to get a job in the federal government.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

                      Washington state does rock

although I lived in Walla Walla for the years I lived there

I call this area the DC area, but native DCers call it Washington

does she have nice T&A? That would help with the political jobs.....

Probably church going too (with T&A)

Washington has rather a vibrant singles scene. Fortunately I was virtuous and met Dan and Jon instead.

                            Working for politicians
Not that many options. Best way is to start with someone who is new, and these people will already have their contacts.

As for ngo's that's a good option. I'm doing elections work right now for a friend of mine who runs one of them.

Sure, I got the job because I was qualified, but also because I've done volunteer work for him for a long time.

I'd love a proper full-time secretarial job so I'm not sure why she's complaining about them as a new graduate. You have to start somewhere.

My suggestion to her is to use her time outside of work doing volunteer stuff that she likes. No better way to pick up contacts and confidence.

Just a thought. There is another thread here about major environmental problems in China. Perhaps they may be looking for help.
