  • IMO, the PS3 isn't a success, design-wise. The 360 looks way better. And the croissant-looking gamepads...

          E3 2005: Revolution Details Emerge
Two-to-three more times powerful than GameCube.
          by Matt Casamassina

May 17, 2005 - New details regarding Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed Revolution, have started to sprinkle onto the Internet. The machine, which will be revealed during Nintendo's pre-E3 2005 show on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, will sport a slick, black design and a front blue light.

Revolution will be "two-to-three times more powerful than GameCube," according to Nintendo, which also acknowledges that the next-generation race isn't solely about new technologies. By contrast, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is 13-15 times more powerful than the first, according to the publisher. And Sony says it's PlayStation 3 is roughly 35 times more powerful than PlayStation 2.

Nintendo also revealed that using Revolution's new Wi-Fi connection, gamers would be able to go online to a free gamer-matching service. Interestingly, in a move similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service, Revolution users will be able to download classic and new Nintendo games over the Internet. Nintendo cited such examples as Donkey Kong and Super Mario Sunshine, which suggests that Revolutionaries could have access to games for all the publisher's previous consoles.

They'll be going the way of Sega & Atari by getting out of the hardware business and becoming strictly a software company.

            • I don't know about that. They still have a commanding presence in the handheld market.

                • Look at the size of the thing.

It won't be the fastest. Nintendo's been downplaying the specs/technology for a while now as well, saying it's not about power.

The signs are all there, even without Nintendo's admission.

                    • Sony adding Blu-Ray to the PS3

                      Sony supporting Compact Flash cards

                      Sounds expensive, though.

                      That's because 1080p isn't a standard HDTV resolution yet.
                      You're FOS. It's a standard ATSC format.

                      • Nice slick design. A bit conservative though, compared to the 360. Now does it live up to its name? What's so revolutionary about it?

I see the Revolution also uses a slot-drive system. I think Microsoft made a poor design decision using a standard DVD tray. The slot-drive is the only way to go if you really want to use your console vertically.

I wonder if that means that Sony and Toshiba didn't come to an agreement on next-gen DVD's.

                          The 360 is progressive-scan btw.

                          • I'm not sure what it means, other than HD-DVD will be entering the market at a much, much lower price point than DVD did.

I was expecting the X-Box to have these features and Sony not to have them. Interesting! Advantage Sony, without those ugly controllers and the front-loading optical trays (I guarantee they'll have tons of complaints about scratched discs).

Anything less would be a letdown.

                              Not at 60fps.

It's still in the draft phase.

                              There's a 30fps 1080p, but that's ridiculous for video games.

You were expecting the biggest proponent of Blu-Ray (Sony) to not have Blu-Ray, while the biggest proponent of WMV-on-standard-DVD (Microsoft) woudl have Blu-Ray...?

Slot-drives are known to scratch disks? I didn't know that. Man, that sucks. Microsoft made a good decision after all.
