I get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night, and I'm proud of it. And even better, I never have to wake up early in the morning.
    I agree; I get 7 to 9 as well.

One thing I've noticed, though, is that all 8 hour blocks of sleep are not the same. When I sleep Midnight-8 am, I feel much more refreshed than when I sleep 10 pm-6 am. Unfortunately, I don't have a choice about my 6:00 wake-up.

Actually, neither of those are siesta countries -- not sure if it never caught on in teh Philippines, or if we just made them give it up when we showed up, bursting with efficiency, productivity, and all that other inhumane crap.

get a job with the government - being asleep at work is fine with us
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

Read the new Readers Digest. (No, it's not boring, but it has an article on a new medicine, that seems to fit perfectly... If only I could remember the name...)

That's who I work for, AH; unfortunately, I went to all that trouble to get a government job, then got posted to the second-busiest visa mill in the world.

oh okay, well you need to orientate yourself

First off, counter staff, those who deal with the public, are the lowest of the low, the slave class, because dealing with the public i.e. people like Ned in person, is a fate worse than death. No naps for you.

Then you get the people who have desks and do processing work. These people can have naps if they can master the art of sleeping sitting down. Its okay to put your head down during a break but better still experience shows that creative use of files can disguise naps. Another good one is to put your elbows on the table and cup your head in your hands with an open document or file in front of you

Next major step up the ladder is people who have windows and natural light. These are highly prized. But having a window is not enough. You need to move your desk around so you can face out and sleep. Strategic placement of petitioning can help.

The Lords of bureacratic world are those with offices. If you have a glass office or windows, get blinds. Then you can sleep anytime with the door closed. Put a post it note on your door so it looks like you are out. There is a reason why senior managers get an office and a couch, and the latter is not for visitors.

But for the most blissful rest you need a back office job and this is your best bet if you don't want to wait till you climb the ladder of promotion. These are jobs away from the public and from the bosses, areas like archives, computer room, technical areas. Any backroom guy worth his salt will have a full sofa and maybe a fridge and TV stashed somewhere in his work area. Be sure and keep and alarm clock too so you know when its time to go home. I knew one guy in a basement archive who used to bring his pyjamas to work. To be shown these areas is one of the highest privileges ever bestowed so be humble if it happens.

Now if none of this works, you need to learn the layout and architecture of your building. Every government office has seldom used rooms, storerooms, stationary rooms and the like. Sick rooms, if they have a bed, are nirvana because noone uses the sick room. Government employees go home if they are sick. For the desperate there is the disabled toilet.

You see, the problem is not you can't have naps. The problem is you are now a government employee and you need to start thinking like one.

So you tell me: how do you stay alert after lunch?
Do you snore? If so, go to the doctor and ask him if you have sleep apnea.

If not, are you getting enough sleep? 7-8 hours? Also, there is no excuse for not excercising. You have to make time. It is really important to your overall health and well-being. Also - dont eat too many carbs..
