The problem is that many of these huge capital projects are beautiful to look at, but are not that useful. Africa literally has skyscrapers in the jungle. Better to do micro-aid. Or better yet, to foster capitalism. The single action that we should take is to lower our sugar tarrifs.
of course, but this has nothing to do with what kidicious is saying. furthermore, the world bank has no control over USAs sugar tariff.

    1. These projects are not pure make-work. There is an element of them needing to be paid back.

    2. (see previous post) Highways through the swamp are not always what should be first priority. It can be make work that although it employs people does not create any value.
yeah but highway through a swamp to a village allows that village to ship their produce to the town, and allows them to buy the towns produce. a win-win situation. the paying back comes from the govt, and in the long run, the government gains more then they put into it. you cannot put a price on the well being of your citizens.

No it doesn't. Where has a World Bank project tripled the income of the locals?

        LoA,

A highway through a swamp can not be justified. It will never create enough benefits to justify the costs. Maybe this is the kind of mistakes that the World Bank makes.

            1. I don't know what kid says. He is a moron. So he is on ignore.

            2. Yes...but we (US) have control over what mechanisms to use for external effects. hence the comment juxtaposing the two methods.

            3. Your comment is pedantic. sure a well-placed road allows trade to develop. but my comment says that many times these roads are not well-placed or justified. They are white marble elephants.

and you know this beacause youve studied the cost-benefit of every possible road through every swamp to every village in that swamp in the world?

and i agree with you completely - but just because you can die by driving a car doesnt mean we should not do it.

I suppose that you're not familiar with the World Bank's relationship with Mobutu.
