Plus, the people of the United States had no real stake in winning Vietnam. How much did the average person care about how Vietnam was governed?Originally posted by Odin
Vietnam was unwinable, the US millitary sucks at guerilla warfare, especially when the majority of a country's population is not on our side. We couldn't go total war on North Vietnam because it would of caused World War III.I'm about to get aroused from watching the pokemon and that's awesome. - Pekka

I'm not disagreeing that the events you stated happened. I am only pointing out that the justification is complete BULL**** and when you think about it, the leading cause of communism is imperialism and the resulting oppression that most communist states have suffered at the hands of the so-called freedom loving countries.

For the record, Jane Fonda did not say she regretted going to North Vietnam. Only that she regretted taking a picture at the anti-aircraft gun. She also acknowledged that the NV governement took at advantage of her by getting her to do it. She maintains that she was acting in what she felt was the best interests of the American people and attempting to expose the lies of the Nixon Administration.

When you read through the links you'll see a very Christian Capitalistic Imperialistic country acting in it's own best interests against a weaker sovereign nation. You will see these Christians being bigoted and racist. Not only encouraging drug use but making it a law. The appeal of communism is that anything was better than being made third class citizens in your own country. The freedom that some of us espouse and thank god for was not being offered to most people living in the communist countries under there former leadership.Last edited by Pax; April 6, 2005, 16:26.What can make a nigga wanna fight a whole night club/Figure that he ought to maybe be a pimp simply 'cause he don't like love/What can make a nigga wanna achy, break all rules/In a book when it took a lot to get you hooked up to this volume/

To her, the US was clearly on the wrong side in the Vietnam war.
To her and to everyone else, except Ned of course...

Vietnam was winnable if we had invaded and occuppied at least the Southern portion of North Vietnam. How far north we could have advanced and avoided Chinese intervention, was the isssue.

Westmorland actually was planning just such an invasion when Tet happened. That is why Tet was the turning point in the war.http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/JOrbisPlayer.php?path=John+Williams+The+Imperial+M arch+from+The+Empire+Strikes+Back.ogg&wiki=en

I wonder how John McCain and other tortured POW's feel about Jane now. She visited the POW's. As she passed down the line, some POW's passed her notes saying that they were being tortured. She turned these notes over to the commies, who promptly retaliated against the note writers, and then got on radio Hannoi saying that the POW's were being treated well. When McCain and others returned to the United States and reported their torture, she proclaimed that they were liars.

Notably, she has not apologized to the POW's.http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/JOrbisPlayer.php?path=John+Williams+The+Imperial+M arch+from+The+Empire+Strikes+Back.ogg&wiki=en

Yeah, I suppose that everyone should have been happy to live under a one-party dictatorship with religious and political persecution.

Maybe for Americans, who have a much more fluid idea of nationalism. But the Chinese still spoke Chinese, considered themselves Chinese and were considered by others to be Chinese.Originally posted by Kuciwalker

They kept trying to get out for a long while. Then policies in Western nations changed from open doors to ambivalence if not hostility. Also, things settled down within Vietnam (from what I've read).Originally posted by Urban Ranger

Even then, there are still people trying to get out, but they are using normal immigration.

It's China that now has people desperate enough to flee that they could be called boat people.(\__/)
