  • Responsiveness:  The patient would immediately respond to sound, tone of voice and to touch and pain.

Sensory Exam:  The patient was tested to light touch, pressure, and sharp touch and pain in all four extremities and on her face.  The pain portion in the extremities was conducted by pinching the nail beds of her hands and feet.  She clearly feels pain as the videotapes show.

On the face, noxious stimulation including cotton swab up the nose and gag sensation and papillary touch with cotton evidenced a pain response. These were more than just reflexes, as she appeared to be annoyed by these painful responses long after they had stopped, and would not smile at me again for the rest of the day. She certainly feels pressure, as was discussed earlier, and opposes pressure with voluntary motor activity.  When using a sharp piece of wood, which she found uncomfortable, and going over her entire body (except diapered areas and breast areas), we found that sensation is present everywhere.  Sensation on the right side as evidenced by moaning or tightening up muscles or withdrawal and was more prevalent than on the left.

    Impression:

The patient is not in coma.
She is alert and responsive to her environment.  She responds to specific people best.  She tries to please others by doing activities for which she gets verbal praise.  She responds negatively to poor tone of voice. She responds to music.
    She differentiates sounds from voices.
She differentiates specific people's voices from others.
She differentiates music from stray sounds.
    She attempts to verbalize.
She has voluntary control over multiple extremities
    She can swallow.
    She is partially blind
She is probably aphasic and has a degree of receptive aphasia.
    She can feel pain.

On this last point, it is interesting to observe that the records from Hospice show frequent medication administered for pain by staff.

    Not a court-appointed neurologist though...

        • The law is wrong. Plain and simple.

Laws like this, quite frankly, make me:

          1) truly, deeply, and implacably hate the two-party system and the ever increasingly amoral pseudo-"democratic" system we have here.
          2) believe more than ever that the political elite does not give a rat's ass about your average American.

          • Why does the site hosting a neurologist's report matter? It's a medical report, not an editorial, so I fail to see how the site's bias would affect the content. If you want to discount this doctor's opinion, go right ahead, but don't cop out by basing your rejection of it on the people paying for the bandwith...

              • Why does the site - or the Doctor - matter? You can always find Doctors who are biased and let their personal beliefs interfere with their professional judgement. That's why courts appoint neutral fact-finders, or why evidence has to be available for both the prosecution and the defense to test it (though if you have a pro bono defense attorney the state may force him to accept the State Police labs report by not giving him money for independent verification).

On Christmas Eve 2002, Bush appointed three outspoken anti-choice doctors to the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA, which is responsible for making recommendations on several aspects of family planning. The most appalling of these appointments was Dr. W. David Hager. In a book he co-authored, Hager recommends prayer and reading specific scripture for relief of aliments such as headaches and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Additionally, he is outspoken in his opposition of prescription contraceptives for unmarried women. Dr. Hager is associated with the Christian Medical Association and the Physician's Resource Council of the conservative Focus on the Family group

First site I found on this imbecile. His publications are a matter of public record, as is his appointment.

He's a neurologist for the family. You aren't interested in hearing their side of the story?

                  • cool, a woman was arrested trying to bring her water.

This is what I want to see. Civil unrest.

The cool thing would have been if she gave Terry the bottle of water, but she drowned because she couldn't swallow.

                    • How long do you suppose a person can live with out food water or any nutirents?
When you find yourself arguing with an idiot, you might want to rethink who the idiot really is.

                      • people are talking about kidney failure, I'm not sure about that (unless that is what dying of thirst really is).

In the desert she would die in days. But she's in an air conditioned nursing home and she's not exerting herself. Maybe a week or longer.

You know what would be really cool? It's impossible, but it'd be cool if the hunger and thirst triggerred her back to reality and she walked out and went to the nearest 7-11 store.

                        • A doctor said a few weeks, but I would have thought she would be dead by 3-5 days with no water...

More or less a week without water.

                            • A friend of mine pointed out that this Schiavo farce is a win - win situation for the GOP. Even though they look like fools in the court of public opinion, it has shoved other, even more embarressing news off the screen. We just passed the 2nd anniversery of the beginning of that idiot's war. Two, we aren't hearing anything about DeLay's woes. Crafty.

As Mrs. Tubes and I already mentioned, without consciousness, you can't swallow. What would happen is the fluid (or food in other cases) would go into the body's lungs. That's how my grandfather died. He aspirated his food and got pnuemonia.

I've regurgitated slightly in my sleep and aspirated the vomit. Let me tell you that is a most unpleasant experience. Stomach acid is not something you want in your lungs.
