...the problem is Fez, there is no sport in rationalising with you or having a slight laugh/troll with you. It's like playing pool against someone who is colourblind...it's too easy, it's no fun, and it's rather unfair on you.

Or as others say its hard to get anyone to admit when they are wrong. I for one just hope that, that article was wrong.

I think subsidies as a whole are idiotic. Think about it. We pay taxes to a government who gives that money to farmers to produce expensive food, whereas we (the first world) could import that food from the third world, more cheaply. We save money, doubly so through saved taxes, and the third world becomes more prosperous, trade increases, global economy goes "yeah!".

So why do we pay the farmers? Perhaps it's their disproportionately loud voices, giving them popular political power. So a few thousand hicks get made unemployed. One of the beauties of the first world is that they can retrain and get other jobs, not starve to death like those in the third world.

              Common sense or democracy?

              Common sense > democracy.

The United States, but we don't have to shut out less fortunate nations that may well gives us a better deal.

Thats the point. Why should we send the work acorss the world when it can be done here. I know to save a buck right. Wrong, you do this then poverty here goes up.

No, we just redirect all the farm subsidies to social programs. Besides, the way I understood it the largest recipients of farm subsidies were corporation farms that didn't need them anyways.

While this is true, the corperate farms, they do have american workers doing the hard labor. cut the coperate subsides and leave the personal farmers alone. You cant do that either the workers are american.

American farmers can retrain. It's not like they'll starve. Sure it'll cause hardships for some people, but nothing like the hardship suffered by + ten times that number in the third world. Financial inconvenience suffered by tens of thousands, or life/death struggle faced by hundreds of thousands? Tough one, especially considering that the humane option is also the cheaper one .

Well then you just have to get technical. How many American, legal, naturalized citizen workers will lose their jobs compared to how many people can be fed on an expansion of any nutrition program? Many Americans would probably lose their jobs but you always hear about machines or Mexicans doing our farm work.

and look at all the jobs that will be created in america if the 3rd world gets more money: a thousand times more then the number of farmers who would go bankrupt.

I don't think it's just a question of who can be fed as a result of outsourcing food production... trade would stimulate entire economies... but I'm no economist so I can only speculate on the extent of the difference it would make.
