The solution to students striking is simple. Make them still pay fees but don't give them a penny of financial aid while on strike. End of stupid student strikes.

Ask deGaulle how stupid these strikes can be.
Just bring on the tanks if commies are trying to pull a fast one...

There is a strong social malaise in France since Chirac's re-election
Yes, but I wouldn't blame that on Chirac, just like I don't blame the destructive widespread cocaine use and glorification of pornography in US in the late 1970s on Carter.

Edit: to clarify: IMO it's the selfish French people who are to blame, refusing to budge even towards minor reforms, constantly striking and taking somesort of bizarre pleasure from only making their own problems worse (you seem to be happy because French economy will suffer because of the strike -- I think that's a very odd attitude, it's your nation, you live in it, it's you who'll suffer from it).

No! No! No! I'm going to Paris two weeks from now!
        Why Paris, why not Helsinki?

No, not really. Something like 10% or 15% of the total work force is unionized and these are all government jobs which only stay unionized because politicians are afraid to stand up to them. The reality is the unions are weak.

yeah but if the number of strikers are overrepresented in certain sectors (postal, train, metro, RER) they have disrupted these things by more then 7%. that makes them strong. the nationwide TGV out of Paris is running on average at 50%, with some stations (Paris-Montparnasse) running at 30%. if 7% of the population can shut down 50% of the nations trains, heavily used trains that people depend on to get around, they are strong.

This message comes from someone who'll take the train in a few hours.

Yeah, you are a Commie .

It'd be nice to see the government break the stikers (by not giving in, not by pummeling them), but the French have no balls to do that.

We messed up the economy of Paris for a whole month in 1995.

Without I wouldn't have won a grand trip to Finland.

It was a b*tch to get there though.

                            So, use a car.
and thats what everyones doing. so you have 10 million parisiens all in their peugots trying to drive to work when normally the vast majority of them take the RER/ metro. in paris' small streets, that means huge cluster****s and disruptions.
