Police tend to "provoke" people by confronting them. If the guy is by himself, he is no threat to anyone. Just leave him alone, he'll calm down. I can understand if there is family or hostages near him, then you have to confront him.
but when the guy/girl kills someone one hour later everyone will say the police should have done more...i am not promoting police violonce but a drunk guy with a knife is probably more deadly than a sober guy with a knive...and if the cop thinks he is in danger he should act a accordingly...if i have to choose between a dead cop or a beat up/death suspect i will go for the later one
