And IIRC, the bus costs just as much as a plane. So, all in all, it's easy.. FLY!
Not necessarily. Greyhound go anywhere passes originating in Canada max out at $200CAN flat (tax included) for any distance.
Ben, if you have the time, go Greyhound. Like JohnT said, it won't be the most comfortable, and sometimes you'll want to kill yourself, but its very rewarding. I guarantee you'll have alot of stories to tell when its over.
Ooops! Apologies to MRT. For some reason I had you confused with JimmyCracksCorn. Sorry about that.
Believe me, most people say the same thing when I tell them about my trips. Only one other person has been crazy enough to go with me. But its awesome, you can't appreciate until you've done it. Being on a bus for over 4 days straight, through different time zones and many different climates with no sleep whatsoever and only hot dogs and chips from the Greyhound "Travelers Grill" is nothing short of a mind altering experience. And the people you'll meet you remember for life.

That's what I figured. As for the sleep, I can sleep on those busses without a pillow, and I will definately eat what I want on the trip.
I may like some discomfort, but this is supposed to be a holiday after all.
As for a person joining me, I know my mom would think I was absolutely insane to do a trip like this.

Well come to Los Angeles and I'll take you to West Hollywood.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

now you have me almost tempted to take a bus trip...
Greyhound -- worst road experience of my life
Amtrak -- much better!!!
Faster, much more comfy, fewer stops, no concerns with traffic, safest method of transport. Plus, you're up higher, get better views, and the RR infrastructure (original Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific lines, all still in use) goes through some of the most beautiful areas of the Western US.
Personally, I value my time and would fly. but if you want a taste of what's between your starting point and your destination, I can see the value.
As for Texas, you'll find Dallas and Houston to be pretty mall-like and modern -- tall, glassy buildings downtown, an abundance of expressways, and lots of new suburban enclaves.
Austin is awesome, especially if you like live music. Great arts scene. State capital is there. It's the "liberal hotbed" of a very conservative state, so there's lots of contrast. I got some great food there, too -- BarBQ and Tex-Mex to die for.
San Antonio -- I hear good things, but I've never been there.

the best part about greyhound was how everyone has a criminal record...or at least all the people i talked to did.

BK, if you want to come to Texas I can put you up/take you out....let me know....
Either will be most appreciated.
It won't be for awhile though.

I am considering Amtrack. It sounds like a good tradeoff between comfort, and seeing the country.
Of course, that means I would have to decide between going down the coast, or going through to Chicago.
