First, a bit of Clay history, paraphrased from recently compiled documents in the storage room:

For many generations the Claykin were ruled by absolute monarchs, with varying degrees of success. A strong, wise, competent king could bind together the will of the army, nobility, bourgeoisie and peasant classes, and devote their energies towards productive and successful ends. Such monarchs were few and far in between. One such ruler came 6 generations ago. King Edrelsquing III saw the mediocre state of his people, how the elements of society were set at odds and often prayed on each other, and were more often than not worsened in their condition by their leader. So he created and implemented a system utilizing the strengths of the elements of Clay society to overcome many of its most crippling weaknesses. Instead of simple hereditary succession to the throne, the council of nobles chooses, upon the death or abdication of the previous monarch, the successor from among any direct descendent of any monarch up to 3 generation previous. In practice, they will choose the most capable candidate. This is because the aristocracy needs the king’s power to protect them against the legal powers of the general classes, because the king appoints the judges that rule on matter of law within the colony. The aristocracy has power because the judges must come from within their ranks, and they have veto power over some matters of colony resource allocation (but the king can create new positions to the aristocracy out of the general public, but rarely does this because the aristocracy and throne tend to get along). The commoners have power because their tribunes make most of the laws governing the people. This system is fairly balanced, keeping the three sections of society from teeming up against each other, but also keeping them having to cooperate fairly equally with both other elements or their position will be compromised. The system has worked fairly well, with only minor and correctable exceptions, since it was implemented.

6 gnomes to go to the land of the Wall gnomes and show them tunneling methods and how to make good pebble axes.

5 gnomes to study and learn rope-making techniques from the Wall gnomes

all 10 ants and 15 gnomes to try harvesting fibers from the grass and bushes in and on the edge of our territory to see which ones make the best ropes (types that are strong, types that are simple and easy to weave, types that are flexible)

5 gnomes to go to the nearby trees and find the biggest, strongest shells from acorns available. They are also to look for sources of good strong bark that can be easily harvested. More information next turn on what we will do with this stuff.

And finally, 5 gnomes are going to put to use the excellent innovation that one exceedingly clever gnome recently had: Scratch-remembering. We take a piece of grass, or bark, or small rock, anything with a surface that can be scratched into, and simply draw a series of pictures of objects! Instead of the bulky remembering system using objects themselves, this will take much less space, and much less time to compile, as objects can be easily reproduced on grass, instead of having to go out and find another object to complete the sentence. The choppy system used to decipher the previous object code has been amended, expanded in its use of the precision of symbols to allow for greater accuracy and subtlety of thought. This method will greatly increase the quantity of information that can be stored and the ease of creating and deciphering records.

    The rest (28) breed.

If the clay Gnomes send their ants as scholars to us, it makes us doubt their appreciation of our technology...

        From: Twin Lake Gnomes
        To: Wall Gnomes

If you will agree to give us ample amounts of rope, we will give you something our scientists are thinking about that could very well save your tribe in the future. This deal would not be made now, as we still need to prepare it.

This may work, we´ll come back to it when your "scientists" actually have something to offer.

Orders due Sunday at 5 US western. I'll update Saturday, though, if all orders are in.

10 of the Twin Lakes science gnomes will explore a method of using smoke to dry and preserve food. They will construct several "smoke houses" with a fire pit dug in the bottom and tadpoles stuck on hooks on the ceiling. If all goes well this method should provide a good source of food for the winter. 5 fishergnomes using spears will provide tadpoles for this science experiment. 10 more fishergnomes will fish for the general populace. 40 gnomes will dig and construct a food storage facility to store the smoked fishes for the winter, and other such food storing occasions. It will consist of a big pit with stairs dug into the ground and a tunnel to attach it to the underground walkway adjoing the barracks and the city. a short building (just a little taller than biggest gnomes) will cover the granary.

20 gnomes will join the army as legionaires. Of the 9 most experienced gnomes, 1 will become the general of the twin lakes, and the other 8 will become officers. A squad of Twin Lake military gnomes will always be accompanied by atleast one officer or general. ants will work by hauling loads across the colony. The remaining 27 gnomes will breed with a passion previously unbeknownst to these lands.

Micha and Bipolarbear should feel lucky that I'm too busy to update today, but should get their orders in very soon.

Also, I'd just like to clarify something: Your gnomes live in cities, marked on the map by the black dots. To decrease population density, you may either improve your city's gnome dwellings or found new cities, thereby moving some gnomes out of the parent city. Exploring does not decrease population density, because your gnomes live in the cities. Exploring does benefit you by bringing areas with resources under your control, where your gnomes can harvest them much more efficiently and with fewer losses.

                      Wall Gnomes

Upon return of the exploration party, King Mikus listened the reports about what was believed to be a myth by the forefathers. He came to the conclusion that the Bush, in such close distance to the protecting wall and the promising waters of the twinlake, is too important to not be secured.
He ordered the foundation of a new colony at the wall, where it´s closest to the bush. The colony will be named "Carnh Aeloree Central", or short C.A.C..
The 75 settlers will be chosen by the king himself (He always stays in contact with the commons, as the aristocratic class is more or less non-existent). Twenty flail gnomes, the veterans, will protect the settlers until they can field their own army.

Additionally, 25 gnomes in the capital will start experimentations with ranged weapons. We have ropes and stones (from the wall), there must be something to do with that...
30 gnomes at the capital will continue the work on the rope network. They should concentrate on vertical transportation between the various "levels" marked by brick rows...

All other gnomes will "work" hard to ensure a fast population growth...

However, why do they only live in large cities? They should be able to live in towns around the land.

Gnomes live in cities for protection; strength in numbers and the fortifications (if you've built any) discourage predators. But if you'd like to found some small towns around your territory, go ahead. I'm very open to whatever you guys want to write into your orders; what I said there is just how it is at the moment.

And in reference to someone's idea about being able to tell the landforms inside your territory, after the update land owned by a colony will be light if it is on the mown grass, same as now if it's on high grass, and darker in trees.

Order changed noted. I'm involved in the musical at school, so updates and NPC responses may be sketchy, but this NES is still up and running, just a bit slower than normal.

Update started. Bipolarbear, I won't wait for you, but I'll update POWARS last, so if you can get orders in before I absolutely need yours, you might be ok.

*Note: "Update started" means it'll be done sometime in the next couple days.
