I'm uncertain how people can say that the conflux magic heroes are weak. That's the one hero type where you're guaranteed not to get a useless skill. As for the creatures, they are very good if (and only if) you get the spell Bless. The damage ranges, as far as I remember, are really wide for the first three levels of creatures, and they can pack quite a punch with Bless. I've never used fire/ energy elementals much, and earth/ magma elementals are too slow to bring with you. The psycic/ magic elemental is very good, though, and the magic imunity can be very useful when fighting unicorns etc. It is rather anoying that you can't Haste it, though, but with expert tactics and one or two of the speed boosting artifacts (many ifs here) the can often take out two or three stacks the first round.

Tactics and Bless are absolute musts for the conflux hero, but it seems really hard to get for them for some reason.

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.

Oh, and Chaos is very powerful. The thief should be up to expert stealth within the first week, and then you can usually flag all the mines without risking losing any creatures. (You can always let the sorceror bring some dragons and whipe out the creatures guarding the mines for xp later on.) after this the thief will get xp really fast, since it gets to all the treasure chests and powerups a lot earlier than other heroes, and I can usually go into the enemy's area and flag his mines before he gets the chance to do so.

The thief is one cool customer. But then again, you don't have to choose chaos to get him - death will too. And death is way better than chaos otherwise.

The necro town is very powerful, yes. The only real reason why I usually go for chaos, is to get that extra 1000 xp from that base improvement. Advanced stealth as quickly as possible to start grabbing stuff.

Well, I voted for Tower, just to even it up a bit.
I agree mostly with your choices, but I do like Rampart for the gold, and for Pegasi and Unicorns.

I really dislike the need to have one hero tasked with running around collecting resources from springs, mills, etc. and heroes hanging around just because you can't move an army without one. The "structures race" can be a bear, too. haven't tried HoMM4.

Unicorns aren't as useful as Dwarves...
                  -
What's so bad about having heroes for the armies- armies are fairly useless without heroes... because of the bonuses... and you canl have a garisson without a hero- so waht's the problem?

                    Reporting for duty!

HOMM3 and SMAC are the two older games that have never been removed from my HD! LOVE 'em!

Favorite town: Dead-even tie between Dungeon and Rampart.

Reasons: ALL of Dungeon's creatures sport a special ability:

Trogs - Immune to blinding...so what if they suck, you get a metric TON of them!

Harpy Hags (no retailation). Gives Dungeon effecively THREE shooters out of seven levels of creatures.

Beholders (Evil Eye): Shooter that doesn't mind going hand to hand (full damage).

Medusa: Shooter that doesn't mind going hand to hand AND can paralyze hand to hand. Sweet.

Minotaur: Relatively fast, and good movement range. Packs a TREMENDOUS wallop. (okay, so not a special ability per se, but it's the ONLY exception!)

Scorpiocores: Weaker HP's than they oughta have, but still awesome, and their special (paralysis) makes up for the HP deficit.

Black Dragons: Nothing needs to be said about the awesome nature of this particular critter....

In all, their units have fat hp totals and can take a punch. This, IMO, is where they beat Castle. Crossbowmen can't fight if you park next to them, and Crusaders die if hit back, and ArchAngels don't hold a candle to Blackies....

                    Rampart:
AWESOME synergy, especially if you have either haste or teleport. Your elves are invincible....what....somebody is *actually* gonna walk over and bother the elves with the 'roids standing guard? Pah!

Dwarves. Rampart gets more level 2 guys than some towns get level ones. They're cheap, can take a beating, can deliver a solid punch, and can stand toe-to-toe with higher level ground pounders and make a good showing (I'll trust my Dwarven horde to give at least as good as they get on those Crusaders any day of the week, and we're talking about a lvl 2 critter squaring off against a lvl 4!)

Gold Dragons...nice, but relatively weak....Rampart doesn't win or lose by virtue of her level sevens tho....

If money is no object, Tower is the most powerful overall, IMO....but money is *always* an object, so I'll stick with Rampart or Dungeon....

                    -=Vel=-

                    EDIT:

                    Dungeon = Deemer....'nuff said!
Rampart = .....that dude with the movement special....'roids on the offense? Ohhhh yeah!

That's right! Forgot about that....sturdy critters, them Minotaurs, but NOTHING beats the Hemm-'roids for overall durability....those guys just ROCK!

And, it really *is* possible to use them offensively (tactics, haste, teleport, movement special....any of those will do), but of course they really shine defensively, where they can double up as a "portable wall section."

                        I love 'em!

                        -=Vel=-
EDIT: Even tho in my head it's a dead-even tie between Rampart and Dungeon, I voted for Rampart cos...it's prettier? lol

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier.

                          Andemagne, I vote Necromancer.

I love the Vampire Lord rush with skeletons and Dread Knights. I can absorb lots of punishment with minimal losses. Liches are usually left with wraiths for castle seiges. Once I stopped a huge army with 200 Zombies. The invader just kept taking hits from the castle towers.

Other combinations of troops that I like to stick in:

Angels/Devils. They give me a decent top level troop and the Angels do not suffer a morale penalty.

Ogre Lords. Bloodlust is cool on Vampires.

                          Nagas.

                          Champions, fast and tough.

For an archer group I like cyclopes.

I usually upgrade to skeleton warriors and cast stone skin. This makes my skeletons damage sinks for all the ranged attacks. I don't make more skeletons through the transformer though, I usually rely on resurrects.
Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

allso a good choice. I've seen necropolis army defeate a larger dungeon army.

I love the Vampire Lord rush too, I'm usually able to stop it with my Castle Troops.

The Castle is my absolute favourite.

Griffins are simply stunning in every field of operations.
Crusaders are also incredibly powerful, easily able to go toe-to-toe with bigger units.
None of their other units are bad, even their 'worst' unit, the monk, is far better than many other units.

They also have some good heroes, Orrin being my preference; I like heroes with unique specialties. He's also the first hero I got when I played the Heroes3 demo for the first time. Edric is also pretty decent.

wohoo! Castle is leading with allmost 1/3 of the votes.

Dungeon has just 1 vote. don't understand that.
