    City of Heroes

Anybody hear anything about this MMORG? I tend to not like these games, but this sounds like something I might like:

You'll start a new game by creating a superhero from one of five different archetypes and from one of five different backgrounds. The archetypes are: the blaster, a damaging ranged-ability hero; the scrapper, a damaging melee hero; the tanker, a tough melee hero; the controller, a manipulative hero who can stun or confuse enemies; and the defender, a support hero. These heroes can come from one of five different backgrounds, including: mutant, science, technology, magic, or natural. A hero's starting background determines the source of his or her power, whether it be from inborn mutant abilities, superior physical conditioning, or ties to the occult. Background also determines the basis of a new hero's starting "track." That is, background determines what sort of missions will be available to you at the outset of the game, and it also determines what sort of villains you'll face at the beginning. However, you won't be stuck facing the same villains for the rest of your career, since you can change your hero's "track" so that you can face off against different villains and missions later on.

In NCSoft's upcoming online game, being a superhero is mandatory--but the cape and tights are optional.

That sounds interesting, but superhero(ine)s are notoriously hard to balance, at least power-wise. The best I have seen is Champions, but it still has some minor problems.

The website looks pretty cool... but if it ain't free to play online, it's not the game for me.

You just missed the beta, where it was. I missed that too, but enough people have said enough good things for me to order it. Horizons had potential but just never delivered so its time ot move on.

The way I see it, if a game is still being played after 30 days, its worth a few more dollars. There are so few SP games that can last that long and I'm not a fan of the sort of free multiplayer games you get.

Usually I hate those MMORPGWhatSoEver, but this one sounds really interesting

Though I don't have enough money to spend $10 a month to play it...

Two years ago they said to be able to 'win' a chance to play the beta, all you had to do was to sign up for their forums, but it seems like they've changed this, so to be able to play the beta you had to pre-buy the game

No that is a misunderstanding. Those who were in beta had the opprotunity to pre-order the game at the end and get 3 days head start on the general public.

I'm now having a whale of a time bringing justice to villains on the Victory server.

The hero generator is awesome. I've made 6 toons just to play with the different costumes and have ideas for at least 20 more.

Its a levelling treadmill, there is no doubt about that, but if you ignore the XP bar and just run around being a do-gooder it is a total blast!

I've not seen the big bad Rikti aliens but then I've not tried to stray into zones I know are too tough. The mobs at my level are an interesting mix of fantasy, horror and gothic. There are several street gangs of punks whose bosses are more than they appear, with superpowers and shady links to more unsavory types. Then there are mad doctors with armies of zombies, nazi types with mechanoids, clockwork robots of various kinds, a bunch of cultists with magical powers and more.

Missions started simple and are building in complexity. The first tier is a little repetitive but builds in depth if you keep gunning for the same villain types. Some missions have you taking down a few bad guys on the street for clues. These will lead you to a warehouse, cave, sewer or apartment where a plot needs to be foiled. Each plot grows in size and scale but can feel similar if its still the same 3-4 mnster types scaled to your level. Around 15th you can face off against the arch villain of many of the gangs and foil their intentions for good. Apparently you need a friend or three to beat those dudes unless you really know what you are doing.

Others like the 5th Column (nazi) apparently keep building in power. I hate those scum and blast them at every opportunity. That is where this moves away from old style MMOGs for me - I don't care about the "xp", beating up the thugs and getting the gratitude of a passing citizen makes it worthwhile. I make a point of doing good deeds in every zone I pass. Sometimes one swipe is all it takes to clear a bunch of bad guys, other times I may have to unload all my power just to defeat one thug, but inspirations are cheap to replace and it makes me feel goooood

No. You can not roleplay villians either.
