The "one shot one kill" doesn't really apply to UT (unless using Instantgib), since you wont get a kill (by first shot) unless you hit the head... and to hit a head isn't what noobs are good at...

And the gamepace is as fast as you want it to be in UT... the gamepace is slower in q3 compared to UT...



But lets talk about something else... we wont agree anyway, so let's make room for other players to talk about what they hate...

Its ok for a bit of light fun now and then, but in the long run i find it more fun(healthy too) to play a sport for that kinda hit.

I will eternally remain faithful to Soldier of Fortune (SoF1). It's not because there are professional players in Q3, UT2k4 etc that these are the only games requiring skill and have competitivite aspects. + it's got loads of cheats. Even with punkbuster or whatever protection Q3 has I can play on the protected servers with aimbot and kick major arse

every fps is competitive. how fun it is depends on you. unless you just don't like fps games i don't see how you couldn't have fun playing q3 for a winning team in ctf or maybe tdm(team deathmatch).

that's just as stupid as fps players who complain all civ is micromanagement ad nauseum. obviously you don't like those games so it's usually better to just say that. if you are going to bash gameplay you have the be specific instead of saying it's repetitive(as all games are). just because some fps games bore you doesn't mean other people don't get excited and passionate about them.

Yes you are right - sorry for coming across so rude my comments should have had at least an IMHO

I do play FPS games - but i much prefer the single player modes, the odd few times i did play MP(used to do a fair bit on DeltaForce) - i found it mostly IMO a fairly futile exercise in very short life/death cycles(but not in any philosophical sense like in a game like 'mythology of kyoto' for example).

I wasn't a bad player either, but after the initial excitement of the first few times it lost its ability to keep me interested. Add to it the fact that some people do find a way to cheat at these games rendering any real competiveness or sense of acheivement pointless, well unless you find out how to cheat too - but i never did enjoy cheating at games?

I do enjoy FPS games,single player campaign modes the most(as in the Ghost recon type games) , and the FPS is an important part of our computer game heritage as it is a main driving force behind the whole industry these days.
Still not my favourite genre IMO, but worthy of shelf space on my hard to please games cabinet - for that bit of light relief on a rainy sunday

I love many many games of many genres, but I can honestly say few gaming experiences can get close to the thrill of a FFA blat with great players in Quake3. I also think the look twitch shoot comment is beside the point - there is a great big difference between looking twitching and shooting well, and looking twitching and shooting badly. So many people that are ignorant of MP FPS equate the mindlessness (after all, it is about shooting people, then shooting them again ) with simplicity. I played Quake3 competitively for a long while, and I can attest that the skills of players like Zero4 and Fata1ity are beyond belief.

Theres FPS, and theres pub games. Two completely different game, same software.,,,. but two complete different games. seriously.


i havent played sof1 or 2, but i heard game design was pretty rubbish. Fun game, but crappy for any serious play.

I play SoF1 with a ping of 16-30. That's fast enough. LAN won't be any better than that. Even if it is, you won't notice it anyway (not in SoF1 that is). Besides there are only a few games played in LAN: CS, UT, WC3 and some others. Q3 was popular, but nowadays it is hardly played on LANs.

You don't have to think I'm a newbie.. I play in the belgium national team for SoF1 (which is perhaps not a big deal to some of you, but I know how to frag). I'm just trying to say that it might not be as competitive as some of the 'big' games because there are no tournaments with money involved, but nevertheless it requires some skill.

That's where you're wrong, weapon of choice in SoF1 is the shotgun . It's all about close combat, and making headshots. The early mp was not that great, but the gold patch 'upgraded' the shotgun to a more powerful version, turning it into a totally different game. You don't know what it is untill you'ce played it yourself. I have tried out all the 'big' games, and tbh Q3 is all about spamming the rockets on the right place.
I've seen some real Q3 players in a LAN, 1v1. Basically they do the same thing everytime; rushing for the armour, shooting a rocket in alley #&, shooting another one in alley #2 and at the same time going at 100mph.

Of course I just don't like plasma weapons and 'lag' on weapons (like rockets) so nothing will ever make me like the game

PS: UT2k4 instagib (or ut2k3) is fun but it's a bit repetitive too, and it involves a lot of camping

The longest time I've ever camped in UT2k4 was like 5 sec (When looking somewhere else than the computer). I've never played instantgib against other human players (yet), but atleast the bots doesn't camp (Like they did in earlier UT games)

And have you tried to take an Onslaught map, changed it into a DM map, then play it instantgip? This defently changes the gameplay

the map Rankin is the worst map in the game. As I had the demo I mostly just played Onslaught or that attack/defend mode (From the first UT)... only played that map when I couldn't find a descent server with other game-modes...

- the 'Street Fighter' kind (Goon-foo,...).

Then, there are games, it's not that I have no respect for, but I just do not understand the fun. Even if you buy me one, I will probably not install it on my PC.
- simulations of 'sports' where balance most important (skateboard, ...).
- team sport simulations (football, handball, basketball,...).

there is a certain magic in ffa within all the chaos. nothing really matches it. public lopsided ctf games can sometimes come close though.

agreed, what's even more telling is that some of the top players play at such low sensitivities you could hardly call it twitch with them.

yeah, it's sad. i think part of this is because generally most mp fps gamers are mindless themselves for whatever reason. once i personally found my way onto clan frequented servers and into competitions things get much more complex and interesting.

I played Quake3 competitively for a long while, and I can attest that the skills of players like Zero4 and Fata1ity are beyond belief.

what's scary though is the level of unknown talent out there on internet servers. maybe i should start a general fps thread if i can write up some good stuff to get it started as most gamers here could learn a lot from us really hardcore fps gamers.

Well, I prefer deathmatch over the other modes... onslaught is a bit weird tbh. Plus I hate to run all the time because the vehicles are always gone,... gets rather annoying

PS: I know the guy who made that Rankin map so it's a good map u understand . it's well balanced, and it has some nice features such as those big white plates on which you can jumpdodge to get up quickly without using an elevator
