In our neighborhood games (mid-70s, SW Michigan), we used to call them "status symbols" (I know, dumb name - but so is "boat"). I had one friend who had the wooden blocks for armies; everyone else had the plastic pieces.

Played almost everyday when I was home. Great fun.
However, there is a much more fun version of Monopoly designed by a Canadian, Pierre Berton.
It's called Klondike.
Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

If played right, no one ever gets to draw their 5 card (except maybe the first person to get 5). It should be over by then. Or in the last round.
WHAT"S A MISSION CARD.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I've played (and finished) lots of monopoly games... we only cancelled the game a few times... If a game drags out, we just take a break, and finish it the next day...

I hate it when people cheat at games like Monopoly and then when you complain they say "It's only a game. What are you so upset about?". Well, if it's only a game, why do they cheat, that's what I want to know?
I used to love this game, almost begging for others to play against me... but about a year ago I finally could get my familiy (Don't know any friends who even just remotely 'likes' board games) to play a game... though we could only get my brother to play the game if we played with his rules: Cheat whenever possible
That was the most boring game I've ever played... I haven't played monopoly ever since, and doubt I'll play it within the next 5 years, because I only know 3 other people who likes this game... and two of them only wants to play it if they can cheat...
I just don't see why anyone would cheat in a game like this... I understand why people wants to cheat in SP games... but MP???
It's kinda the same as if someone doesn't want to play Civ3 because there's no feature in the game to cheat in MP games

One idea that would be easy to implement - I thought of this a while ago but haven't had a chance to try it yet - is to use four dice instead of two, three white and one red. The red die would be interpeted as negative. This means you could throw anything from -3 to +17This space is empty... or is it?

Examples of missions include: "Take Africa, Australia and one continent of your choice", "Take North America and Europe", "Conquer 24 territories of your choice" (you don't need to have a single entire continent here), or "Eliminate the red player" etc...
It adds some tactical/strategical new elements... And the fun when you seem to be completely out of the race, not even having a continent of your own, then exchanging a nice combo of cards for armies and wipe out the red player (which you have carefully closed up on), showing your mission card with a big smile on your face... Read it and weep!

A friend of mine nearly lost his girlfriend over a Monopoly game (they're married now). He was the bank and made up his own rules. He'd lend money to everyone, but her... He claimed there was nothing in the rules preventing the bank from deciding whom to take on as a customer... They didn't talk for a couple of days...
