"Q" from Might and Magic VI. Ok, he was not scarry, but dumpy. He had 10,000 HP at a time when most monsters had less than a 1,000. He used the finger of death and funny little sap.

THUNK.

Huge Army, better stats than you'll ever have, dimension door, serious attitude, sphere of negation preventing spells in combat.

And all you get to fight him with is one hero, though strong, always weaker than THUNK, with human troops, and if that hero dies, you lose the game.

As for grunts, I'll add another vote to those intelligently acting poison spitters from Dialbo 1.

I beat the entire game without using healing poitions, just scrolls of town portal, and they were by far the most difficult section.

runner up: German Panther and Tiger tanks in any of the Close Combat games, especially when you killed them by sneaking a bazoka squad up behind them or one of your Stuart light tanks got lucky.

The Cyberdisks in X-COM were just nasty. When you saw them, you knew that someone was going to die. Their plasma attack burned right through even the best armor, and they self-destructed with a massive explosion when they died. Killing them gave a sense of accomplishment.

As for the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy/Gal), I'd vote for Chrono Trigger's Lavos. All console RPG villans want to destroy the planet, but they usually have some stupid metaphysical reason for doing so. Lavos was just a big hungry monster, and that was cool. I liked the way they set up that enemy.
