Here's the best that I could do with a google newssearch:

Video game maker 3DO Co. of Redwood City has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy laws.

"This filing gives us more time to complete transactions in the interest of our stakeholders," says Trip Hawkins, chairman and CEO. "While we hope that this news will generate additional new opportunities, at this point we are focused on pursuing either the sale of the entire company or the sale of its assets."

Earlier this year, 3DO said its net revenues for the quarter ended March 31 were below expectations at approximately $10 million.

At the time, Mr. Hawkins cautioned that the game maker was trying to conserve cash after "market conditions for us appeared to take a turn for the worse when the war with Iraq began." Slack sales prevented the company from accessing a credit facility, he said.

Under Chapter 11, 3DO will continue to manage and operate its businesses as a "debtor-in-possession" subject to supervision and orders of the Bankruptcy Court in San Francisco.

Such a shame such an incompotent company owns the liscense. NWC deserves all of the credit for the earlier HOMMs... you should have seen the pathetic advertising they gave for Heroes II. Half a page, shared with craptacular ports from the 3D0 console. It's a good thing that that game had the word of mouth of god, as well as an excellent demo. I remember playing the demo over and over again I got from my PC Gamer CD... and then on a semi-whim, when I saw it in stores, I realized that all the other things I was thinking about were silly, and I should just buy that.

I hope they sell the liscense to somebody who knows what they're doing.

Considering some of the tat they have produced in the recent years its a wonder they have survived this long imo. Might and Magic IX was one of the few games I stirred myself to take back to the store inside the 10 day return policy. Unfortunately its no guarantee that the better franchises won't be bought by people with even less of a clue about how to make a good game.

How can you ever go bankrupt publishing a game like HoMM2?

HoMM2 and M&M6 were fine, which is why the company managed to produce HoMM3, HoMM4, M&M7, M&M8, M&M9 and Crusaders of Might and Magic if not more. Some of those games were dogs, which lost them a lot of cash and reputation.

I never liked their games much anyways. HoMM2 was the only worthwhile game they ever made.

It's amazing their net revenues for a bad quarter are 10 million and they're still in bankruptcy territory. They must be wasting a ton of money.

And I like how they blame the war on Iraq for their problems.

Making a popular game doesn't yet mean you will make large profits. As Static suggests, I wouldn't wonder if their operating losses are large. Especially if they have wasted on worthless development and oversized staff, They have probably also overestimated their revenue and maybe done some poor financial decisions. If they would do things like EA Games or Atari, they would make clear profit. Also blaming for the war in Iraq in just so hilarious. None the less it's of course a shame they had to quit.
