Avast, ye scurvy dogs! Yarrr!
I never played Pirates, but I once saw it at the house of a friend of mine when I was... hell, I dunno, 9 or 10, maybe. Saw it for all of five minutes. It looked badass."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Do we know that Sid is going to be the lead design or is it going to be Jeff? And is Firaxis still trying to produce two games a year?About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger-related causes. With a simple click daily at the Hunger Site you can provide food for those who need it.

I could see 3d as a good thing, actually. It would be awesome to have a nice smooth zoom, so you could zoom way out, then zoom in when you approach the coast or something. Same with the sea combat portion. But something like 3d sword combat wouldn't necessarily be good. Simple, but functional should be the design key.
As for the RPG elements, it would be cool to have something like BNT (or Tradewars) with reputation and experience- experience and reputation without "levels" per se. An expanded number of "perks" would be cool too- health, swordfighting, etc.----

Sid Meier doesn't do anything anymore, except lending his name to the game. Sid Meier's Gettysburg!, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Sid Meier's Sim Golf, Sid Meier's Civilization III, Sid Meier's Bla Bla...

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Actually, SimGolf was made by Sid himself. He programmed the thing.

Just on the GameSpy site:
Now it's time for Sid Meier and Firaxis Games to bring this exquisitely rich, action-adventure game into the 21st century. An entirely new game engine will deliver updated gameplay, stunning new features, spectacular 3D graphics and enhanced surround sound, so players can fully experience the intrigue, adventure and danger of life as a pirate on the Spanish Main.
In Pirates! you take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean amassing fortune and fame in an attempt to seize your rightful place as one of the most revered (and feared!) pirates in history. Test your skills as a sea captain exploring the high seas and exotic ports in a richly detailed 3D world. Overtake the enemy and seize valuable booty. Exchange plank-shattering broadsides in fierce naval battles, and engage in duels with worthy opposing captains.
As your reputation and skills grow, so will the size and quality of your crew, and your ability to take on larger enemy ships, raid and plunder heavily fortified ports, and locate ancient treasure. There's a whole cast of interesting and dangerous characters to meet, mysteries to solve, exotic island destinations to discover, and powerful alliances to forge!
The new Pirates! carries on with the great gameplay and design simplicity tradition of the award-winning original while adding more challenging and exciting battle options, and deeper and more varied role-playing experience, including multiple paths to a wealthy, happy retirement. This and many other features and additions make this gaming classic one of the most highly anticipated releases of this century!

2 quick things I glean from this:
1. 17th century captain- Starting dates no longer an option
2."deeper and more varied role-playing experience" - Sounds like it could be good or bad.----

If he makes a Civ IV, I hope it has all the best of Civ I & II, I just couldn't get into Civ III...
