Whatever they do, some will complain it is boring, ruined or unambitious.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

Competing with an old classic is always hard.........hopefully they will make a real attempt to match the gameplay, not just make a pretty but empty game.

Yeah... I've played many games, which were based on a classic, but most of them failed, because they made one small change... that killed the game

It's sad, but true... nowaday everybody wants pretty graphics, but the time wasted on doing the graphics, could have made the game better... and sometimes the graphics actually kills the game (e.g. Lemmings 3D... such game shouldn't be made 3D)
This space is empty... or is it?

            1) The "average"? How do you measure that in hand-to-hand combat when there's nowhere to retreat to and you could get your head blown off at any moment?

I would say "extremely" skilled to survive. Check out Admiral Cochrane - 19th C "adventurer" rather than a true pirate, but still chopping people up when most of us nowadays are retired.

My point is, the swordplay was the heart of the old game. That 2D joystick action won't satisfy anybody nowadays, so Firaxis have their work cut out with something as enjoyable that today's audience will appreciate.

            2) I'd say a whole package games has the greater potential. To be either a whole new great game or a whole new waste of space. It's a risk most companies won't take nowadays...

This would be the most anticipated game of all time for me. No game has ever captured my heart and soul like Pirates!Gold, not even Civ2. For 2 years, 1994-1995, that was all that I had played. As I mentioned in a pirate gamer forum, all I want is for them to update the graphics and to be less predictability (like knowing where the Fleets will be). That is all. I really, really don't want them to mess with the simple elegance of the game - like the kluggy debacle that was Civ3. Civ3 tried to do too much, be too linear, thus the disparate parts never worked together well, imo. I fear, like others, Pirates!2 may go that same route. Keep Pirates!2 simple because it played nearly perfectly. Why re-invent it?

The latest round of bugs and crashes make civ3 PBEM unplayable.

Firaxis can make whatever they want. I'll never pay for another SM product.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

There is a god! He answered my prayers!
(Pirates! still remains my all time favorate game. I missed it so much, I downloaded an emulator just to play the Amega Version of it)
Exactly, except I played the Sega version.

Colonization 2 might have been nice, but not SMAC. Frankly, you really can't improve SMAC. I'd like to see you try!

Ok, as someone who loves Civ, and loves Pirates, do you all think I would enjoy Colonization? I've never played it... hell, I never even HEARD of it before I started hanging out on 'poly.

It's was a great game for it's time, but too many exploitable loopholes. But if Colonization2 came out I'd be very interested.

I must admit I've never played those Pirates. Civ, yes. Colonization I also knew of and saw before Poly. Of Pirates I only learned some two years ago.

What's so great about it, I wonder, gotta try...

                              The announcement is this evening.

Colonization was a great game...I still wish I could play the DOS version and hear that great midi music.

Pirares2.com has just been registered - supposedly by Atari but that might be untrue.
