I actually think the fundies have good chances to gather much support in the near future.
Saddam has completely barred the road to power to the Imams. Religion wasn't a significant political force, and was only used to gather more support by the regime (in the few last months of it, when the regime wasn't laicist anymore)

The Imams know the current period is the time they can get to power, and they'll use the religious frustration of the population to gather support. The Sunnis will use the legitimate fear that Sunnis will suffer from revenge, and the Shiites will use the willingness to 'get back what is due'. Except if the Sunni fundamentalists are massively supported by the Sauds, I think the Shiites will win this one because they are more organized.

The complete absence of traditional political parties in Iraq (exiled parties don't count) means the divisions of the society will be handled by the only organized factions present : Kurd nationalists and religious organizations.

It is not sure Iraq will go fundy. But it is not unlikely, and efforts should be made to avoid it.

Here's also stuff that is going on now that couldn't go on under Saddam. I'm really happy to see him go, the rat bastard.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Not unexpected. For most Iraqis, the preferred order of things is

                1. Elected leader
                2. Foreign White Guys who can't speak their language.
                3. Saddam

They celebrated because they moved up one on the ladder. However they want to continue moving up, and can't if US troops still reign.

BTW I think it's really funny that some of you guys are like "Yay, they're unhappy!"

And yet, so many disagree with people protesting here. Not just what they say, but the fact that we do it at all. Apparently we're traitors here.

Iraq, however, is not homogenous, and many people are happy the Americans are there.

The trick really is to get Iraq functioning quickly and set up a government that will be able to survive the inevatible civil war. The question is, will the US be there when it starts? If so, it will take the form of a war of liberation against the US.
Che, is the alliance between the Kurd communist party, the Kurd patriotic front and the US holding?

i think he's more interested in the fact that the Iraqis themsleves don't want a US-Friendly regime (or, what America would call friendly)

well, we need more pro-american demonstrations. that initial "thank you for liberating us" stuff doesn't counter this.
