Well, you have a wide choice of housing.

Usually the biggest rooms in housing are further from the campus. Shoreland hall and Broadview, as well as a few others are a short busride, or about 5-10 minutes on bike from campus. They have no dinning rooms of thier own, so you have to go to campus to eat.

On capus you have several more dorms, ussually with smaller rooms but closer to class and services. Some of them are more difficult to get in than others.

As for courses: I don;t know much about Math or science courses. You have to take electives, so if you are there, I recommend any class with bernard silberman. he teaches Japanese hisotry, but he also teaches a sort fo series based on the philosophical writers that ddin't make the cannon of western thought but are still highly influential, such as Schopenhaur, Nietzsche, Adorno, Kierkeggaard, and the Facists and proto facist thinkers.
The classes are called Losers, To hell with the Enlightenment and Springtime for Hitler

If you go to open house, see if any of them are running and sit in.
If you don't like reality, change it! me

silberman is awesome. i would also suggest taking a mearsheimer class, if you're interested in polisci. he's damned convincing in his realist rants.

who else? daniel drezner is a good prof. i don't know if he will still teach the soc class next year, since that's kinda a luck of the draw thing; they pool the staff and so.
      cathy cohen (soc) is also nice but don't make her mad... you mess up in her class, and she's rather unforgiving. ^^;

bruce cumings is a fun teacher to listen to in the east asian civ class and other east asian classes. like mearsheimer, he's got quite a bit of charisma.

Hey, if our boys can build breeder reactors, they can make other things too

U of Chicago has an OK physics group, so if you plan on moving in a physicsy direction I would recommend them.

The only girl ever to dump me (before I dumped them ) was studying at Tufts (but she was so beautiful I would forgive her if she walked into the room right now (don't tell my wife!)), so screw em!

its going to take me forever to decide about housing..... singles? doubles? something else? do i want a quiet person? the only thing i'm sure about right now is non-smoker

college deadlines are approaching very rapidly and i still have no idea what i'm doing

Well, for Chicago, you simply look at the housing brochure and decide which are your highest picks for housing, You don;t pick your actual room first year, only what buildings you want to live in: which building you get into will determine what sort of room you will get the first year. Only a few buildings would let you get a first year single, and they would be very small.

Unless you had some prechoosen roomate, they will pick your based on what you put on your card, and they never put people who asked for non-smoker wit a smoker. They do an OK job at roomate picking. Many people I knew loved their roomates and got along very well. Other, including myself, had very bad experiences with roomates.

I've looked through all the brochures, I don't really see any advantage of one building over another.... except maybe if its too far away during the winter

I don't mind roomates too much, I'm a generally very friendly person - as long as they don't get night terrors or anything.... I need my sleep, and my food, and my 5+ days of music

I'm also assuming sports is somewhat of a joke?

Actually , they are very good. The school is only division three, cause they don't care to give out sports scholarships, but being division three, the university does very weel, they have some new athletic facilities, and there are plenty of intramural sports. Also, in UofC, there are really no "jocks". In general, people participating in the sports programs have higher GDP's than the general student body.
Oh, and you have to take a physical exam and know how to swim. If you don;t know how to swim they make you take a class, and if you don;t do well on your physical exam, you have to take between one and three quarters of phys-ed, though the classes are not too difficult.
