University of Chicago's pretty wacky, in my experience. If you're eccentric or just plain crazy then you'll probably fit right in. Dunno how well the "normals" take to it, though.

Well, I studied PolSci, and right now I am in Limbo, since the plans I had made fell through.

but I like ideas more than something that actually does something

That might as well be the Alma matter of Chicago. It is a very "nerdy" school. For example. the school cheer goes:

Thucidedes, themystecles (no idea about spelling..),
          the Pelloponnesian war
          X squared, Y squared, H2SO4
          Who for, what for,
what the hell are we cheering for?
Go Maroons.. (our wonderful school color..bleh)

It sounds a silly as it is...

I don;t know about busy work. Math orientend classes give out problem sets regularly and hard-core science classes have long labs to do. most wiritng classes ask you to write only a couple of essays for the whole class, but hey also ask you to read large amounts. One quarter, I spent 300 on books, while the most expensive book I bought was $30 bucks.

I will not play it down..some people do crack under the pressure they put on themselves, and even those that have no problems do spend a lot of time working, specially at Math and science.

Just visit the campus at Scavenger Hunt time...
my second year two guys built a small reactor that actually did create a miniscule amount of plutonium, so their house could claim that they built a breeder reactor. They had all the stuff in thier room....

Remember that the average location of Chicago's "name" economics faculty is 35,000 feet over the Atlantic. You will get a good econ education there due to the ciriculum (sp? ) but you won't see senior faculty much as an undergrad. Too bad, because some of them (eg Lucas) are terrific teachers too.

Yeah I'm not too big on the maroon, but I could learn to live with it (they will pay!)

So far it sounds great, I'm not too worried about cracking under the pressure; hakuna matata (or is that matada) meh never could spell anyways

I'm going for an overnight visit this monday - wednesday so I'll have some first hand experience of campus life

Yeah, econ. majors in Chicago are a dime a dozen. Most love the department, a few hate it. Interestingly enough they don;t seem to like UofC undergrads form econ. going to their grad. school. I was friends with one fot eh darlings of the department-bought evry single neo-classical diea the school passes, was one of a very small number that got honors for the department, and they would not give him a penny of grant money for grad school. He ended up at Berkeley (what a change)

The thing is, at Chicago they assume you already know all the basics like Supply and demand curves and so forth. The first class of the program is 201.

IIRC, virtually nobody gets grant money the first year of econ grad school there. You pay your own way and let the market sort it out. The qualifying exams after first year of econ grad school are an absolute bitch.

Happy to discuss the neoclassical ideas (some are a bit much, like rational expectations), but that is another thread.
