  • Guardian: Australian Forces killing elite Iraqi troops

    Australians 'kill elite Iraqi troops'

    · Chemical weapons fears · 2nd UK soldier dies in combat · More US pilots on Iraqi TV

The 500-strong Australian Special Forces Task Group today said that it had taken out two of President Saddam's command and control centres, killing some of the Iraqi leader's elite soldiers. Reports would only say the centres were "deep inside Iraq".

Two Iraqi command and control centres for ballistic missile systems and anti-special forces operations were reportedly destroyed.

    • More from The Guardian: Domestic support for Tony Blair rises

The prime minister will today brief MPs and the country on the mounting British death toll in Iraq, boosted by figures suggesting a small majority of the public now backs the military action under way.

In six days, the number of people who think Britain and the US are right to take military action against Iraq has risen from 50% on March 18 to 56% on March 24.

Trust in the prime minister to make the right decisions regarding the war has also jumped from 55% to 65% in the same time frame.

            • Meanwhile, CBS News Correspondent Phil Ittner reports that Army doctors who treated some Iraqi prisoners of war, believed to be some high-ranking Iraqi officials, found Cipro pills among the Iraqis personal possessions.
Cipro is meant to ward off the effects of a biological attack from several toxic agents, foremost among them, anthrax.

An important note to add to that is it's Gen. Barry McCaffrey, former commander of the 24 ID in GW I, which was the most agressive, best performing division in the war, and the primary force that shredded IRG Tawakalna outside of Basra. McCaffrey has a lot of credibility as a soldier's soldier and all around solid ass-kicker.

                        • The Washington Post reported before the beginning of the war that the Powerpoint presentation given to the officer corps detailed estimated casualties. When they were detailed, the officer corps was said to have been sobered.

                          I guess there's a speed/casualties tradeoff or something.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. After four days of fighting, the Iraqis have chalked up successes on the propaganda front, while the coalition has made achievements on the ground: A corps with a fleet of
helicopters is approaching Baghdad, and its hold on western Iraq is deepening. For the first time since the war's outset, the fleet has begun air attacks on one of the Republican Guard divisions.

American television stations CNN, NBC and CBS reported Monday that U.S. officials said the Iraqi leadership has drawn "a red line" around the map of Baghdad and that once American troops cross it, Iraqi Republican Guards have been authorized to use chemical weapons, Reuters reported.

While a senior Pentagon source said he could not confirm
the reports, NBC said its information was coming from intelligence officials who based it on intercepts of Iraqi communications.

"I have a dream: When it's all over, let's take all the broadcasters and news program hosts, with their idiotic questions and their interviews - with that professor from Haifa who practically lives in Saddam's brain, with that school chum of his, with their psychologists and psychiatrists and self-professed experts and anyone who has a mouthpiece on the face of this earth - and shut them up in a sealed room for a week. Let's make them listen nonstop to everything they've pumped into our heads: the contradictory reports and the hellish scenarios plunging us into despair. Let them hear themselves 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If any of them survive that torture, at least they'll know what life looks like on the other side of the microphone."
