They don't want to agree to anything that says "war" because of a not-unreasonable fear that the US will use it to justify action without further consultation, irrespective of Iraq's cooperation or lack thereof.

What's more interesting is that Washington's been opposed to rigidly-defined disarmament goals from the beginning, and doesn't even really support the British proposal.

Tells you something of their actual goals.

The French have a lot of commercial interests with the Baghdad government. My referring to the O'Chirac reactor as such is only partly a joke - Mirage fighters, etc.

Both France and Russia have large money claims with the Hussein regime, and getting sanctions lifted is about the only way they have a prayer of getting that money, or doing future business.

Nothing is unreasonable in the UK compromise, although allowing Hussein several weeks allows him to delay and evade until the summer, which would be miserable, especially if troops get forced into their MOPP-IVs.

Part of the reason Bush & Co. want such a short trigger is the practical need to **** or get off the pot before the temperature really heats up.

Nope. Blair is outmanuvering you. For awhile it looked like the UNSC resoultion would fail to get even a majority of the votes required, now Blair is coming up with a scheme that will get us 9 votes for the UNSC and allow us to go with war more support. Bush has been very clear he will go to war unless Saddam starts some drastic reversal; so you guys haven't accomplished anything.
