  • Building a box... won't boot... help :D

(mods: if you have to kill a thread plz kill the "mobo time" thread)

ok, i bought some parts and i threw them together, pushed the power button, and nothing.

it's like i didnt hit the button.

i believe all the jumpers / power connectores are set in the mobo, what else could be causing this?

In any case I'm sure you also hooked up all the power supply stuff inside too.

Including hooking up the on/off switch to the mobo.

Frogger: no, nothing turns on at all.

Diss: i believe i hooked up the switch to the mobo correctly.

Well then trace the power supply to the fans. They're a lot less complicated than the motherboard is. There should be a hard power switch somewhere along the line. If you have a multimeter start checking connections.

                  no multimeter, sadly.

i'll start looking it over, though.

                  any other ideas?

did you get a new power supply?

I heard somewhere that new powerful motherboards and cases (I have seen some cases with 4 fans) require better power supplies.

But yes trace the power supply to the fans and motherboard. And if the on off switch is correctly plugged in, I'm not sure what the problem can be.

here's another commonly overlooked thing. if you buy a case that doesn't have mobo raisers built in or attachable that separates your mobo from the metal mobo holder, get raisers.

if there's any contact between the mobo and the metal plate, it won't boot.

                            Yes, do check this out.

This was the problem I had when building my last machine... luckily I didn't fry the mobo...

what i honestly don't understand is why case manufacturers don't always provide the raisers.
