I love my '92 Explorer (which replaced my '91 after an accident I could drive away from). It gets me where I need to go without any fuss. As I'm too young to afford a brand-new vehicle and I don't make enough to buy a used, it's going to be a few years before I'll get another car (ideally I won't need to because of another accident ). Hopefully by then Hydrogen-powered vehicles will be widely-enough available. Again ask me this question at that time...

Why would you get an American car over Mini?

I want my car to start when it's cold outside.

I own a 1988 Honda Accord. I would like to own a 1988 Honda Accord. It is virtually maintenance free. Or maybe it will competely self-destruct someday.

I don't have a car. My SO has a Saab sports sedan with which I drive her around occasionally.

"My" current car: Subaru Legacy 91', 1.6 Manual.

The car I'd like to have: One of the fancy BMW.

Because the the American and Japanese cars will cost less and will be better put together. Did you know that J.D. Powers & associates found the average GM car has fewer defects then BMW (and so Mini) or Mercedes? The only companies to have a higher quality rate was Toyota and Honda and the margins weren't that big.

                          Initial quality isn't the problem...

I don't know what you've been smoking but my car is now 8.5 years old an it still runs like a champ. It's only broken down once (a broken fan belt) and it was my fault because as a starving student I delayed getting the 100,000 mile service done until around 110,000 miles.

I've owned two VWs and both were good but required a fair amount of regular maintance, my Grandfather owned a series of Peugots which were constently broken (he finally wised up and started buying Toyotas), and my neighbor owns a Sterling (Rover's failed American brand) in which the engine is good (built by Honda) but the car itself seems to have been put together by a one armed mentally retarded gremlin.

There's a reason the American cars don't hold their values well.

Of course the odd car will last a long time without problems...

Yes, it is called sales volume. There are several million used (feel free to pick pick any year you wish) late model domestics while most foreign makes have a much smaller availible supply of used cars.

So if your shopping for a Caddy Escalade there will be perhaphes 200,000 (total guess) late model used ones to choice from while your Mercedes SUV might only have 20,000 total in the country. With ten times the supply, and with new ones being sold relatively cheaply, is it any wonder the prices are lower?
