Oh, and about any car will last at least 100,000 miles now days. If it doesn't then you've bought a lemon.

IIRC, the Toyota Camry was the best selling car in the US for the last couple years. And those things stay on the road a long time.

The reason, of course, is American cars are notoriously bad for reliability after their warranty periods expire.

Yes, the Camry is the best selling name plate in the U.S. and that has a lot to do with the fact that Toyota has one mass quantity brand which it concentrates upon in the U.S... To compare GM, Ford, & DC divide up their sales amongst several brands.

For instance GM's mid sized platform is used for the Chevy Malibu, the Pontiac Grand Am, the Olds Intrigue, and the Buick La Saber. They are essentially the same car with slightly different sheet metal, different pain colors, and slightly different engine & suspension settings. The sales volume of the GM platform far exceeds the volume of the Camry platform, but, Toyota can claim the Camry name sells more since Toyota is only selling one model on the platform versus four different model names for GM.

The same sort of thing happens with Ford/Mercury and with Chrysler/Dodge.

I drive a 1999 Honda Civic 4-door SE ( well actually my wife usually drives it while I ride my Giant TCR2 ( its a bicycle )

I would love to have something sporty-- like a ferrari ( in a dream world where money did not matter)

With a baby on the way, my more realistic dream would probably be a some form of mid sized SUV (if I could find one with decent mileage and less rollover danger). I REALLY like the look of the Acura MDX but am probably doomed to a minivan.

I drive a two-door Toyota Tercel. It's a dependable little runner and also sort of cute. I'm happy with it and it serves all my purposes so there is no other car that I "wish for". Environmental concerns mean that I probably won't be buying an SUV anytime soon.

just for your info we have had cars at my job that have lasted 300,000 miles with no engine changes. They were american cars of course.

They were vans mostly. Chevy and Ford. But we have also had Ford Rangers last a long time. That is probably the best light truck out there.

Are they diesels Dissident? Diesels do last for one hell of a long time...about double that of a petrol.

WOOHOO! I have a new car! Much nicer than my last piece of sh*t, I don't think I could ever go back to having a car like that again...

                          I drive a Honda Accord.

I realistically would really like to have some sort of high performance sports car, particularly something domestic, but im not exclusive. Im thinking something like a corvette, dodge viper, or mustang cobra. They all cost a pretty penny, but nothin like the lotuses (lotii?) or ferraris i dream to have but probably never will.

But like all other texans, ill prabablely just end up getting a real big truck that i have no use for, but just get it cause its real big!

no, they are gasoline engines. They are just standard mini and full size vans. The ford rangers are of course small pickups.

oh, and we abuse the hell out of these vehicles. So that is 300,000 miles of heavy abuse and very hot summers. But you don't have to worry about rust where I live. We have little humidity and no road salting etc.

Is it because US made cars have high volume, low bhp & low revving engines?
