What do they call it where you're from?

        caret

\Ca"ret\, n. [L. caret there is wanting, fr. carere to want.] A mark [^] used by writers and proof readers to indicate that something is interlined above, or inserted in the margin, which belongs in the place marked by the caret.

Why do the French have to make everything more complicated? It's as if it's their only purpose in this world...

Actually, in English, circumflex is a perfectly good word for the symbol.

The word makes sense when you think about it.

We also call it caret (or hat), but not in the case of "4 ^ 3." Circumflex is way wat too complicated.

What do they call it in the case 4^3? "^" is translated as "to the power of" in CS land, at least the people I talk with, when used in that context.

When identifying it as a symbol, it's a caret (I've heard hat too, but that's just an alias )

Only in some computer languages though. We just call it "to."

Like, "4 to 3." Most of the time it's not ambigious.

None of the languages I use have ^ overloaded to mean power-of.

Unless C++ has it overloaded. But I didn't think it did, at least with the libs I used...

                        It's just standard 'net lingo.

It should be pronounced, from now and for ever as "roof".

And.. a caret is a blinking underscore or pipe, next to where you're writing.

                              upright greater than sign.
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are still missing.
