caret
\Ca"ret\, n. [L. caret there is wanting, fr. carere to want.] A mark [^] used by writers and proof readers to indicate that something is interlined above, or inserted in the margin, which belongs in the place marked by the caret.

The word makes sense when you think about it.

We also call it caret (or hat), but not in the case of "4 ^ 3." Circumflex is way wat too complicated.Originally posted by Asher

What do they call it in the case 4^3? "^" is translated as "to the power of" in CS land, at least the people I talk with, when used in that context.Originally posted by Urban Ranger

When identifying it as a symbol, it's a caret (I've heard hat too, but that's just an alias
)

None of the languages I use have ^ overloaded to mean power-of.
Unless C++ has it overloaded. But I didn't think it did, at least with the libs I used...
It's just standard 'net lingo."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
