Vel,
Just a short response, then I'm heading to the Zoo on this beautifull day in Central Cali.
The US system is not so easy to control and shape. Presidents don't even have that much power. It's like trying to control a beast that knows its more powerfull than you. Progressives like you have always had the best of intentions. You guys want to use the beast to fix the world. The beast quitely sits back and waits for the American people to agree with the Progressives. Then when the beast gets out there with his new powers its the same old story, more dirty history for America."When you ride alone, you ride with Bin Ladin"-Bill Maher

Hiya Duncan!
I will resist accepting the label of "progressive," for myself, though I can't say I mind being labelled as such by folks.
You make a good point, and one to always be mindful of, however, I contend that the beast can be controlled.
What do I base this assumption on?
Simply this: At its core, and on the moment of its birth, the beast was created to serve the people....not the other way around.
It is a matter of steadfast focus, and using all available tools to see that the work gets done in the fashion desired.
Doesn't matter if you liked Regan or not, the one lesson that all future presidents should take from him is the power of the Media.
If congress is acting the part of stubborn mule, take your case before the American people and convince them of its rightness. Worked like a charm for him, and it can work for any other reasonably charismatic president we elect.
If the cause is just, and the proposal makes sense, you can rely on the American people to get behind it.
Our nation has changed a lot in two hundred years, but that part hasn't changed a bit.
And by the way, enjoy the zoo....

What I meant is does he mean the UN to rule the US, some world-wide govt. to rule the US as another one of it's states, etc.

And in that, Sandman, we are in total agreement (per my post on the other thread).

Vel,
Gee I was way off base, when I thought you were a liberal progressive. Sorry."When you ride alone, you ride with Bin Ladin"-Bill Maher

What I mean is an America which submits to UN stuff even though it doesn't like them. Like the landmine ban, or the ICC. Not sitting on the sidelines whining about how the UN is a corrupt bureaucracy when it doesn't get it's way.
so the world is not a correct word, the world is full of unfairness, and stuff that's against the UN letter, and spirit. 'UN' is accceptable, though.

Hey again, Duncan! No apology needed.....in truth, I am uncertain exactly how to label my own politics....never given it much thought (to the label, that is). I just know what I believe, and believe it strongly....

The United States needs to position itself as primus inter pares, first among equals, if it wants to lead.Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..
Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

the point is that "the world" doesn't want to be led by anyone...as long as the US tries to impose its ideals on others it is not very likely to be accepted as a leader.
They should start by respecting other points of view and accept that international contracts are not a one-way street where they can demand others to accept them whenever they like while insisting on its independence when they have to adopt.
The US are a superpower today...they're probably the more powerfull than any country in the world's history has ever been...but that does not mean they should consider themselves above the rules they agreed on.
