Try explaining this to a hungry kid in a third world country.

Think they give a rats azz about NASA being cost effective when food is on there mind?

NASA is one of the few things I'm happy to pay taxes for.
sorry, but do you really pay taxes?

Yes, I pay taxes Doc. I've been out of college for almost 5 years now (shudder).

Remember that Doc probably pays many hundreds of dollars per year to support NASA. He should be able to demand an accounting.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I think they do important, worthwhile work in orbit, but they should'n't be launching 2 - decades old clunkers to get people and payload up there.

I figured by now they would have a good orbital entry vehicle that could launch off a jumbo jet. The way it's done now, with shi*loads of fuel and such a high risk, seems crude.

I pay taxes and quite a bit. But apparently you would rather entitle my tax monies to a third world starving person thereby temporarily solving an immediate world issue. Long term solutions apparently don't apply.

The sad thing is that Che's view is also the view of the general public, so it looks like NASA will be keeping manned missions for a while.

And good for us, because people's lives have been improved by manned space flight. More people are alive because of the medical technology that has resulted directly from manned space flight. People are more productive because of computers, the development of which was masssively improved because of manned space flight. The only people who are opposed to manned space flight are those who are ignorant about it.

I do not believe NASA is a waste of fund.

Although a manned mission to mars would be a waste and too dangerous.

We need to continue orbital work. If nothing else then for national security. Soon China will be in space. And we must continue space work so we are more familiar with the technology to get to space. Time may come when other nations threaten our satellits with their satellites. Developing technology to efficienty get into orbit is always a priority.
